34,500 miles though with the 16T didn't rev the hell out of it but
it got well used.
The shorter doohickey spring was put on around 23K miles.
Ironically, I moved up to MOBIL 1 about last Feb. Was running
Mobil 1 15-50W when it blew.

I think my engine blew from going 75 to 100(100 not so much) on the 405 fwy despite 16T and Mobile 1 for over an hour. Not that the oil got so low it should have hurt anything. Nor did I ever let it. But, with the up tune of jetting(one size bigger) the carb(opening airbox) and the Jardine pipe and high fwy speeds the oil was just flying around the engine(sustained fairly high revs)and not getting enough time to pool at the bottom and 34K miles. The motor was
always babied as far as oil/oil changes/valve adj./air filter/doohickey. But thumpers esp. KLRs don't like
revving and have blow by unless you do the Schnitz and better rings and lighter pistons or Carillo. Though more oil would probably have prevented it--I started with a little overfill. But, so much oil consumption with no smoke and a more than top off of less than 300 miles previous...

I am still not really sure why my engine blew. Obviously, the balancer bearing went...probably first but who knows.
But, the engine was well maintained. Didn't smoke. Had Eagle-Mike short spring and doohickey. Though ridden fairly hard with 35K miles on it.
Oil--engine had 2.75 qts of Mobil 1 15-50 in it--topped up a little above site glass. Less than 300 miles later it started vibrating.
At that time I added .75 qts which took it back overfill; a little above site glass again.
Now I am thinking all those counterweights...not just the balancer shaft itself but also on the water pump shaft just spun the bearing.
I think we should just consider it a bad design. Even after the partial fix of Eagle-Mike's doohickey upgrade. Other thumpers just don't fail in that area.

hello klr'ista's!
Earplugs can fix the problem esp. if you have an aftermarket skid plate.
If you just checked valves and didn't adj., you didn't take it all apart so there isn't much more to recheck.
Did you get cheap gas?

Has anybody had an issue with the torsion spring doohickey mod?
Do you have to cut a groove in the doohickey for the spring to sit in?
Kudos to Fred for having a less marketing driven site...questions like this can get you banned on other KLRista sites.

I haven't done it YET, but seen a video on doing "The DO", and they DRILLED a hole for the spring.
