winter riding season begins..........!!!!!!

Post by Eddie » Sat Oct 22, 2011 10:00 am

OK, for those of you North of the Mason-Dixon Line, don't hate, but today is the beginning of the Winter Riding Season here in the south (I am in New Orleans). It is about 70 degrees, and will stay that way until late December. Then it gets really cold and drops down to 65 degrees, no snow, and clear blue sky's. While may of you are prepping for winter storage of your KLR's, down here, we are getting ready for the start of the season. Eddie M.

I usually don't ride below 40 degrees. Looks like you have adapted to your environment. The fog will be coming in soon in the San Joaquin Valley. That also stops the riding for me. We all have adversities that we choose not to endure. Enjoy the ride when you can. Patrick ________________________________ From: "Eckert, Christopher (Infrastructure Solutions Dept.)" I will ride down to about 15-20 degrees depending on what the day looks like. That is because I use a snowmobile suit and gloves and use felt linned rubber bots when it is cold like that. There is a bigger limiter on winter riding around here. When there is snow on the sides of the road I can only ride if it stays below 30. When it warms up over 30 during the day the snow melts and refreezes on the road at night. I wont ride if there is ice on the roads since there isn't much you can do to make that safe. As long as it stays below 30 it is pretty safe. You just need to hose your chain off with wd40 every day to keep the salt off of it. ________________________________________ From: Patrick Zegers [mailto:pzegers@...] Sent: Monday, October 24, 2011 11:51 AM To: Eckert, Christopher (Infrastructure Solutions Dept.); DSN KLR650 Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Winter Riding Season Begins..........!!!!!! Actually, there are a couple of ways to ride on icy roads: studs or ice screws. A K270 at the end of the season is a perfect candidate for a couple of rows of Gold Screws or Kold Kutters (a couple of brands of sheet metal screws hardened for use on ice). A couple hundred screws will suffice for street use. For sliding around on frozen lakes, you might use 500 or 1000 screws per tire, 2 or 3 or more per knob. Below-zero temps can limit your riding time and make it unpleasant, but your greatest enemies are road salt and automobile traffic. Packed snowmobile trails make great riding venues, but it ticks off the 'bilers.
