starting/electrical problem

Post by deadtvs » Thu Sep 22, 2011 10:05 am

I posted this a few days ago under the last "starting" thread, but didn't get any response, so I'm trying again. A couple weeks ago I started experiencing some erratic starting behavior on my A15. The battery was getting tired anyway, so I replaced it. For a while all seemed fine - took a 3-day camping trip, no problems. Then I started experiencing the same issues. When pushing the start button, I would get the dreaded "click-click", or else it would start fine. Battery voltage would seem OK, and load/hold tests seemed OK as well. I tested starting/charging/ignition systems per the Clymer manual, all components tested OK. So I started suspecting an intermittent short. To that end, I took apart most of the wiring. The one piece I'm most suspicious of at this point is the brown wire circuit that runs from the battery (10-amp fuse) to the ignition switch. Between those points, per the wiring diagram, there are connections for the horn, front brake switch, and turn signal relay. I've disconnected all those items, and I'm still reading @ 100 ohms between the fuse connection and ground. Surely that can't be right? Can any of the electrical gurus tell me if I'm even in the ballpark? A better way to test? At this point, there is no response at all when pushing the starter button, so I can't test the battery draw when starting. I did test the starter switch itself with an ohmmeter, and it appears to be functional. Update: I disconnected all the connector blocks underneath the instrument cluster one by one. The 100-ohm reading between brown wire and ground stayed the same UNTIL I disconnected the block going to the instrument cluster. Once I disconnected that, the reading went back to infinity. This makes no sense to me at all, because I can't see how the brown wire (with all it's branches disconnected) would have any connectivity to the loom going to the instrument cluster in the first place - but maybe I'm just not good at reading the wiring diagram. Anyway, if anyone has read through this novel and cares to offer an opinion, I'd really appreciate it. I have a feeling I'm missing something obvious, but I can't figure out what!
