found a deal on a klr, can you give me advice.

Post by david.r.nichols@sbcglobal.net » Wed Aug 17, 2011 2:06 pm

I found a 1991 KLR 650, they are asking $400 OBO. It has some issues: the previous owner (before this seller) painted it green and it is peeling off the tank, and there is surface rust. The seller claims it runs good but due to a hole in the carburetor diaphragm it won't idle. He also said the fuel petcock leaks and needs to be replaced or rebuilt. It is missing the rear turn signals, mirrors, and fork boots. Also, shouldn't the seat be blue for a 1991? It is black. He said it needs tires also. He said it has 13,000 miles on the odo and he bought it from his brother who got it from a bank as a repo. He claims he can get the title, but brother is on vacation until Monday. Should I pass on this or what?

Thanks, I already did. It was on Craigslist and the guy got slammed with calls. But I was first and he honored that. He knows that the title is part of the condition of the sale. Looks like a little TLC and a couple of cans of bedliner and you'll be good to go. ;-)

That's a long list of issues, but it is only $400... depends on how much spare time you have on your hands... personally I am getting tired of bikes with issues... I just want to ride something that works and won't let me down.... -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of david.r.nichols@... Tell him that you won't buy it without a bona fide title document. Also tell him that you won't buy it until you see and hear it run. Try to get a test ride. Reasons not to buy it: Blue smoke Clanking and clattering Milky oil Left to idle, it goes full-scale-hot (you don't need to ride it to test this, just let it idle and let the fan come on. In the summer, it will) Obviously bent frame, bent forks, bent swing arm, you get the idea. Other than that, it's worth $400 for parts and if it runs, it runs! Just my opinions, of course and YMMV a LOT! Robert P. Wichert P.Eng LEED AP +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================

Plenty of good KLRs can be found for 2k and it sounds like you will be spending 1000 dollars and 50 hours to make this one reliable. DON'T BUY IT; SPEND 2000 DOLLARS AND GET A NICE BIKE PERHAPS WITH SOME FARKLE! J#3

Looks like a sidepanel in the trunk. Scan back a couple of days of messages on the group website there was a how to using bedliner as paint. Rest of the minors, fork gators, signals, tires ect Fred can hook ya up. Carb Dia a HD Sportser uses a CV-40 Carb or did.. cheaper than a CVK-40 replacement part, petcock kit I got at local dealer for under $15. Somebody else has the title is the only part that I did'nt like.. Have fun Dooden A15 Green Ape

small drops of worry

Water pump seal. I did mine around the same milage. I have had no more issues with it for 40,000 miles. I use Engine Ice as a coolant. Criswell Sent from my iPad

Well it turned out to be a 1997 instead of a 1991. Which makes it an even better deal since it has the thicker cylinder head and improved clutch. I am still puzzled about the colors though, aren't 1997's supposed to be the blue green instead of the olive drab green? Only the tank had paint on it, the plastics were not painted after all. The previous owner must have changed the plastics... ________________________________ From: Dooden To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 4:31 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Found a deal on a KLR, can you give me advice.
