engine slow to start

Post by Rick B » Tue Jul 26, 2011 1:40 pm

I was riding up in the mountains the other day, on highway, and after every stop I'd have to run the starter for about a minute on full choke to get the bike started. I went from 6000ft to 9500ft and I had it loaded w/ my camping gear, combined weight of 274lbs. Is that pretty common or is there a problem? Thanks, Rick

The spark plug ought to be "graveyard dead", as my mechanic likes to say. Altitude makes an otherwise okay jetted bike run richer than normal. That you were able to start it on choke baffles me. eddie

engine slow to start

The difficulty you describe is not at all common. The KLR 's CV carb is almost immune to elevation changes. Mine has started instantly and reliably in elevations ranging from 271 feet *below* sea level see http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Death-Valley-2006/1169681_EeRNa#54 669736_9x5q8 ) to 12,119 feet *above* sea level, see http://johnbiccum.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Seattle-to-Denver/17824820_JxGFnq# 1383881312_S2SjFdf I'm not sure if *you* have a problem but the bike definitely has a problem! Rick, Have you checked the valve clearances? Tight valves may make your KLR hard to start. Here's a message on the subject of hard starting: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR650/message/201357 Mike Martin, Louisville, KY ________________________________ From: Rick B To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2011 2:39 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Engine Slow to Start I was riding up in the mountains the other day, on highway, and after every stop I'd have to run the starter for about a minute on full choke to get the bike started. There is a "plastic choke thingy" that is threaded into the left side of the carb body near the top. I seem to recall it takes a 10mm box end but it might be a 12mm. Just loosen that and pull the plunger out. Be sure everything in the vicinity is clean so you don't get dirt inside the carb... da Vermonster

Then put back, loosen set screw/move a little/tighten. The rear was out of adjustment and didn't bother seeing the cause of its movement(design badly?)so I just adjusted and put some RTV in the threads to stop it from turning/adjusting. >
