nklr - an open letter to the douchebag in the range rover

Post by Jeff Khoury » Mon Jul 18, 2011 10:49 pm

Hi. I'd like to introduce myself. I'm the guy on the motorcycle that you nearly killed today. Now, I know that driving a Range Rover entitles you to drive in the carpool lane alone while talking on your cell phone. I know that it means that you're so special that you're allowed to cross two sets of double-yellow lines to exit the restricted lane anywhere you please, and that signaling is optional. I must apologize that after having to stand my motorcycle on its nose to keep from running in to the back of your pretty, shiny SUV I had a moment of hostility where I flicked your mirror with the tips of my fingers, you know - in hopes that it would remind you to use it. I had really only intended to fold it up. But, British quality being what it is, your mirror ended up popping right off. I must admit to a little surprise as it bounced around in my lap. I must also admit to the slightest bit of satisfaction as I heard the sound of it bouncing gaily down the 405. The look on your face was classic as you tried to split lanes to catch up with me in your bloated $80,000 status symbol. In closing, let me express my deepest regrets that I inconvenienced you. I would have stopped and had a conversation with you on why what you did was stupid, dangerous and irresponsible... but I really wanted to get a coffee. Cheers, The biker guy. -Jeff Khoury [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I hate letters like this. They are sobering reminders of how dangerous things are on the highway. I like letters like this (when told 1st hand). It means that you're still with us to tell the tale: Always a happy ending. {British mirror collecting is just a bonus.;) } eddie

Never realized how dangerous driving was until I bought my motorcycle. Living in a city like Houston, riding a bike is a life and death gamble. It would appear that the DMV is just handing licenses out to anyone these days. No signaling ever, changing lanes illegally, and no one checks their mirrors ever. I don't even get to ride that much because it takes more than 40 minutes of nothing but serious balls to get out of the city. Someone wrote........ "I don't even get to ride that much because it takes more than 40 minutes of nothing but serious balls to get out of the city." May I add, and, when you do get out of the city, you are going to dodge suicidal deer who want to end it all by jumping in front of a KLR, or dogs that love KLR's so much that they try to catch them, or skunks who hate KLR's and want to spray them (the pink KLR's that is) and the occasional loose cow or pig. Ride safe, balls optional.

Hi Jeff Glad you avoided an unwanted "meeting", the sad fact is there only needs to be one car there to ruin your day. Couple Sundays ago I was nearly taken out by a Jetta, just me it and a truck behind her on a secondary road. I could see she was talking to the passenger and by head motion probably texting. Sure enough she pulled across in front of me as braked hard ( if you can describe what a KLR does as braking hard) between the back of her car and the truck that was behind her coming at me and of course who was slightly distracted but what was unfolding so was drifting toward the centre line, my escape route. No real issue I was ready and it isn't like the first time it has happened and I probably made it through with a foot on either side. The scary part, my daughter was on back, we were going to pick up her bike from her grandparents garage where she keeps it, it's her first year riding a street bike so we agreeded she would keep it out of the city she lives in until she gets at least a years experience. The good thing possibly, other then avoiding the accident was she was paying attention and saw the whole thing unfold and after we stopped told me she now completely understood our talks on paying extra attention all the time and placing your bike on the road to best escape brain dead idiots. Anyway glad you avoided the worse but should have kept the mirror and put it on ebay, pay for your coffee and maybe get real lucky and meet someone who had just lost one.....have a great day....Greg ________________________________ From: Jeff Khoury To: DSN KLR650 dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tue, July 19, 2011 12:49:27 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] NKLR - An open letter to the douchebag in the Range Rover Hi. I had to sue someone (unlimited civil and won). I did much of the leg work on my KLR. Was risky going to the courthouse etc. because so much traffic. But, parking was usually free, easy and quick. In a car would have been a total hassle and taken much more time. I had women cut me off a few times. They just usually act like they didn't do it. I started following one home once to yell at her when she got out of her car but ended up not bothering. When men cut me off they usually apologize or get real mad and angry like I am at fault. My louder horn might have something to do with it. I have had a few friends injured on street motos lately. The most serious was his own fault DUI into a parked Suburban. So, I have been riding on the street less esp. in traffic in the summer heat. Hard to wear enough armor in the summer heat... I think it is nuts to ride a pre08 on the street with the stock front brake and the low juice going to the stock horn setup. J#3

Although I somewhat disagree with the OP's actions I can understand how frustrating it can be when we see SO MANY stupid ass drivers. I have had numerous incidents over the years and I learn to stay aware as much as possible and it's pretty F'up that drivers can't do the same. What caught my eye was the Land Rover. Here in Dallas there are ton's of older women that drive these and furthermore lot's of women in large SUV's. When they approach a RR crossing they slow down as if they were driving a 30 year old Toyota Corolla which I always laugh at. Stupid bitch you are in a 80K truck and you don't need to slow down and go over a RR crossing at 5MPH! Well they are also probably on the phone! It should be illegal EVERYWHERE for anyone driving a car talking on the phone, illregardless if they have a headset, and the fine should be SO GREAT that folks would think about, *like $5000.00* when caught. Maybe then some of these idiots would pay more attention to driving and not where they are going 'shoe shopping' with the girls this afternoon! It would give the police some more money to have more officers and might stop this insane activity, well maybe slow it down! I would of let the person in the Land Rover catch up to me so that I practice all my 56 years of cussing!

I read this mornings local paper and 3 area motorcyclist died the last couple of days, and it appears they were all at fault. One was running from the cops (bad idea), another hit a parked car and another a guard rail. Watch your speed troops. I passed through west Texas Friday in my car on the way to Santa Fe NM and a wreck closed down the double lane hwy for a while. A PT Cruiser was literally run over by a big GMC pickup. I am sure someone died especially in the Cruiser in that it looked like a crushed beer can. At first I thought it was a Smart Car (Dumb Car). It didn't say a lot for little cars much less motorcycles. It seemed to be literally run over by the truck and a great difference in speed by the two vehicles. How does this happen in the middle of no where on a flat straight road.....texting....distracted......asleep at the wheel? Criswell

Glad you are okay Jeff. I can sympathize with what happened. On my 3 week KLR tour in Baja back in '99 I left a friend's place in Carlsbad Ca for the short run to the border. A black mercedes sedan nearly took me out [missed by a few inches] as it passed me while changing lanes at mach 7. Ironically I was concerned about the safety of riding in Mexico and as it turned out that was far safer!....=-) safe riding, Vik Banerjee threeohm@... www.thelazyrando.com
