new bike?

Post by Don Bittle » Wed May 25, 2011 9:00 pm

I'm getting old. Knees are shot. KLR is too big and heavy. I'm toying with the idea of getting a KLX250 sf (supermoto with 17" tires). It fits and I can load it into my truck more easily. I won't take it on any more long trips at 70mph like with the 650. I have my Voyager for that. Seems like a pretty reliable bike that will do dirt roads and mountain roads. Any thoughts? don a17

I have been thinking of the KLX 250 myself but with the 21 front. Right knee is needing Obama care. Thank God Kick strart bikes are pretty much history. Criswell

new bike?

Post by Kevin Powers » Wed May 25, 2011 9:40 pm

I have an 2006 KLX250 with the 21-inch front wheel. It is a very light bike, and it carries much of the weight down low so that it doesn't feel as heavy or tippy as a DRZ. It is great fun on forest roads or two tracks and and light enough to get after single tracks. One thing about a 250, you will always be aware of which way the wind is blowing or the road sloping. There just isn't much power there. Most folks swap the stock exhaust and the air box snorkel for bits that breathe freer and change jets accordingly. That helps the power, but makes the bike obnoxiously loud. Some folks upgrade the cylinder and piston to 351cc with a kit from Bill Blue; the bottom end of the engine is the same as the KLX300 and has no problems handling the extra cc's. I'm considering the 351 kit myself. I tote the KLX about on a hitch carrier. I would never consider doing that with a KLR but the KLX is light enough that I can mange it up and down readily single handed and the Jeep handles it without any issues. -- Kevin Powers White Bear Lake, MN On Wed, May 25, 2011 at 9:13 PM, Ronald Criswell wrote:

Thanks. All. I guess part of my question was, how will the 17" wheels be compared to what I've had. In reality, because of trail closures, I won't be doing the dirt stuff like I used to. A local dealer has a new 09 for $3600. don

Don, You are mixing oranges and track-bikes here. cough. the supermoto will need superKenda 270 or D606 to do that 'dirt-road and mountain road' gig, unless your dirt roads are different than the ones here! Any tire will handle dry hard pack, but the super moto tires will be like a pig on ice when it gets damp, sloppy, or the road is freshly graded. Heck, the 650 with the right tires is a pig on ice when it is freshly graded. I have a KLR250 as well as the 650 and I think my aging body hears the 250 calling my name more often as well. Wish it had eclectic start.... The KLR is not hard to start, just slightly ergonomically challenging for my 30" inseam. Since I have been admiring the KLX250, (the KLR250) actually hissed at me last week when it thought it could smell the sweet perfume of an electric-start KLX250 on my riding pants; and all I did was 'look' at another bike. Go figure. revmaaatin.

HEY ALLTalk about timeing, I left Johns info on the desk at hm. We were going to TRY and cross paths and after 2yrs of DSN-KLR E's, meet IN PERSON, while at the dragon, & in the blue ridge area, So I was REAL down that I for got the paper. I made!!! My self take my time in Cherokee NC. before starting the Blue R., then got delayed, ate lunch and as I was getting on the bike (K1200lt, I KNOW I WENT SOFT THIS TRIP. LOL)I seen a KLR, with camping gear, I just HAD TO ASK, AND YES IT WAS JOHN. Had a nice talk, I felt we have A LOT in common, If I had my camping gear I would had turned south and road with him. HEY JOHN, They little guy flying threw the AIR, Did you see they have stickers and arm patchs about 3 inch's square? If not and you want one I grabed an Extra for you. Keith?? (needed sticker) I also picked up a few dragon stickers, ( 3 inchs facing right, 1 black, 1 reflective black, not sure what one you needed.) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

The 17 on my Versy will handle gravel and such roads. There are some tires more condusive to dual sport riding. If I buy a KLX 250, it will be the one with a 21 inch though. I don't know why manufacturers don't kinda comprimise and go to like a 19 inch which I think the BMW 650 has? I think the V-Strom 650 does alsp? Criswell
