how to adjust the valves?

Post by robinvaneyk » Fri Apr 22, 2011 7:50 pm

Thank you to all those who responded to my first response. The general consensus is I need to adjust the valves. OK, next question; are there any videos or really good instructions on how I can do this myself iIncluding what tools I'll need? Everyone has to have their first one I suppose, and this will be mine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Robin

Robin, Try this self-help page: http://www.klr650.marknet.us/diy_tips.html You will see a left menu, alphabetical order--valve adjustment. A lot of other good things there as well. Book mark this in MY FAVORITES, you will need it again later. smile. Read this as well; it is in the LINKS on the left side of this page. http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html I found the FAQ helpful to download and print to paper for easy referral and retrieval. enjoy. revmaaatin.

Robin, This is excellent advice from the rev. The videos may be good too, but I have not seen them, so cannot recommend them. But you could do one better. If you can find a tech day near you, you could expect to find some experienced coaching to help with the job. Somebody might even have a set of shims on hand, so you could swap yours for the ones you need. If you happen to live near the Twin Cities, there is a tech day next weekend (4/30) where you might find a guy like my buddy Craig, who is so helpful he might just elbow you out of the way and finish the job himself. He can't help himself. It's his nature.

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Mark, I think that if KLR valves are checked after about 1,200 smiles or so and then adjusted to the max end of spec a guy can normally go at least 12,000 smiles between clearance checks. I kind of recall Jud has gone over 30,000 miles without checking his valves but my memory might be poor on that point. Max end of specs is two sizes since the KLR valve shims are only available in increments of 0.002". So clearances I aim for are: Intake - 0.007" or 0.008" Exhaust - 0.009" or 0.010" I get shims at my local dealer for about $5 each. Sometimes the guys behind the counter are willing to just swap them with me. Shims can also be purchased at BMW dealers with a list price last time I checked that is less than $5 a shim. Ask for shims for a K75. Shim diameter is 29mm. And Fred can get you shims just about before you need them.
