Helllo Stu, I am passioned with my bike and planning lots of mods. I would like to reinforce the rear brake because i will fit the schnitz racing piston kit 705, with hot cams, and FCR carb, and would like to be sure that i will have enough stopping power. I have already installed the oversize 320 front disck. OK Kostas thats kinda what i thought but even with the 705 kit which is not a big jump from 650 i think you could do it easyer with say a better brake caliper and steel braided brake lines and maybe someway to get a bigger disc on the back if thats possible,as a lot of us have found out over the years when you start the "MOD"thing also called "FARKLing"sometimes they work and sometimes,well you get the idea,good luck. KP- I think the question you should ask: Would someone please measure their post-08'(Gen II bike) swing arm and tell me how wide it is (without the plastic seals) at the attachment point? Another thing of interest is the uni-shock absorber linkage/attachment. Is it the same on Gen I and Gen II bikes? You can check that with fiche available on line. The 08+shock is shorter (as I understand it) and it might mean the uni-shock absorber linkage/attachment is also different. I have a Gen I, Pre-08' swing-arm in the basement that I can measure, but I don't think that number will not do you any good. I doubt that the are any different. Many articles have been written on the upgrades in 08, and I don't recall that there was a difference in the swing arm. When you make that upgrade, I believe you will need the (08+) hose as well. I don't believe your current brake line will be long enough. and one last thing: Is the old rotor going to align with the new swing arm due to its placement? I don't have a Gen II bike, or access to one; so that will be something you need to know as well. You might have to have a different spacer to make it all align. Let us know how this goes. Yours is the FIRST conversation I have seen on upgrading to a twin caliper. If you get it done, in true KLR fashion, the mod is named after you: the PETRAKIS mod. or something of your choosing. smile. But only if you get-R--done. You will be world-famous and all the bike chop shops will worship your name! for helping-selling so many salvage parts. revmaaatin.

KP- I answered this differently before-- One person asked, "Why" would you want to-- They were not being wise guys--it is because most of us: includes me, I can lock the rear brakes on asphalt at any time. If you are not able to do that, perhaps you need some adjustments--or clean brake pads, and a clean rotor. On my bikes: One bike has braided lines, one does not. Under normal riding conditions, I see no difference. Under continuous hard braking conditions, the braided lines will not 'swell' from heated fluid and fluid-action; which gives the braided brake lines a ++ feature for some riding conditions. Again, if you are not able to lock your rear brakes on asphalt, there is something wrong with your brakes/mechanism. NOTE: do not lock your rear brakes leaning or while in a curve and then let off: when the rear wheel that was locked, now starts to turn again, the bike will spit you over the side (high-side) and then fall on you! but you probably all ready know that. At the very least, (some might disagree; shrug) remove the rear brake pads, spray them with brake cleaner and sand them (600 grit wet/dry paper; place the sand paper on top of a flat surface, wet the pads and sand the pad side in a circular fashion) and see it that helps. And throughly clean (spray off) the brake disc with brake cleaner. (Do not let the cleaner get into the bearings; it will clean them also! Let the disc dry (drys in moments) Check disc with a clean white rag. Then clean the disc again until nothing comes off the disc onto the rag. When the rage comes off clean, spray off the disc one more time to remove any rag-residue Let us know how that works out. revmaaatin. who is still 18-30 days from riding. maybe. and then I am going ground hog hunting...unless Mark V. H. kills him first.
