Hey
I found then lost track of a place that makes an alum. Plate, the fits Between the headlight and windshield, using fatory bolt holes. has slots for straps, so you can strap on lighter items, like first aid, tire repair/tool kits, sleeping mat, etc., (battering ram..LOL)
 
Anyone Know who sells them??
I was about to make one, when I seen it on the web last  month.
 
To carry something light, Put in two sacks to protect from sand rain, etc, an Extra, water proof sack, and carry the sleeping bag mat up there. Or Rain gear, IN Doubled up stuff sack.)

I've got a slightly thinner one on the front of my KLR with no windscreen and haven't noticed any buffeting since 2004? Replacing the sail of a front fender with a KTM fender removed the buffeting I noticed before the fairing bag. Weren't all Americans socialists in 1935 when Social "Security" was enacted? Jim, I'll bite-- Can't go down hill; there is a snow drift in the way. rev's KLR "mein-kamph" is no longer a winter struggle: the KLR is buried in a snow covered barn. cough. Yet, I digress: I won't 'use' ANY oil this winter. smile. I changed the oil one night (Nov 18) at 38F, pulled the battery(s) and mentally marked the calender with a frown-ee face. TWITCH: It has been two months since I even sat on a bike. The Harley/Kawi/Honda dealer doesn't even offer to 'help' when I walk in--with glazed eyes and furtive brow. They have long known I suffer from an advanced, seeminly incureabale strain of a winter induced virus: the KiLeRista Dakota strain of--sikle-poor anemia. They knowingly nod when I enter their oasis of winter-silenced, metal works-of-wonder, that I will suffer endlessly, until, some south-bound Boeing 737 liberates me to a warmer clime. sigh. Which is NOT very likely. Realisticlaly, the viral effects will continue to esculate as I listen to left coast KiLleRs talk tech days and their rides on the beach. The repressive Dakota non-riding schedule will continue--until the snow melts, the thinly graveled roads turn to gumbo muck and the prairie winds resume their annual and seemingly endless, howling screams of 30+ mph/gust to 50+mph in the spring. Ah, Spring: It remains feast or famine for the a prairie rider and those in need of electricity: neither will have favorable conditins for full operations for many days in a row. However, there are moments when one has the opportunity to crest a prairie butte between the lingering cold snaps and the violent sping thaws, and observe some 30 miles distance the whirling ivory sentenials called wind turbines. The winters are long, aka harsh: but the places to ride are big. No. HUGE. It makes it easier to live here--where the weather is severe, when you know that so few have little more than an asphalt ribbon shared with a zillion others--as their companion.
