<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Steve, It sounds to me like it could be a torn diaphragm. The engine will rev freely without a load. Takes much less energy to turn just the engine versus moving a 400+ pound motorcycle and a rider. So less fuel is needed under no load conditions. A Harley 883 Sportster uses the same diaphragm and slide as the KLR. Or maybe the KLR uses the same diaphragm and slide as an 883 Sportster. : ) I don't remember the part number off the top of my head but I think if you asked for one for about 2000 you'd get the correct part. If you take yours in you could compare them at the parts counter. Cost will be about $50 at Harley and well over $100 at Kawasaki. Good luck with your troubleshooting. Too lean? Does applying choke help? Does partially covering the air cleaner with plastic wrap help? Too rich? Are you getting black smoke? Does running without an air cleaner help? No spark? Get an induction timing light. duct tape it to the handle bars. Duct tape the trigger closed. Are you still getting spark when the engine cuts out? Craig Kahler

To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Date: Sunday, January 16, 2011, 10:25 AM Still having a major problem with acceleration. Problem (continuing): The bike runs fine up to about 1/2 throttle, then it cuts out if I don't reduce the throttle. This only seems to occur when I'm riding it; if it's on the stand and I give it throttle it revs up fine. Also, it's much worse in higher gears... I can ride and give more throttle in 1st or second. I've completely disassembled and cleaned the carb twice. I've also disassembled and cleaned the petcock. But the danged think keeps cutting out on me when I ride it. Ideas? My frustration level is the only thing that's getting a lot of gas at the moment. Thanks, guys, for any ideas. If the effect is instantaneous, my first guess is torn/improperly-seated slide diaphragm.
If it occurs after a few miles of riding, then I'd guess maybe a petcock vacuum leak, or leaky/detached hose from carb to petcock vacuum.

Problem (continuing): The bike runs fine up to about 1/2
throttle, then it cuts out if I don't reduce the throttle. This only seems to occur when I'm riding it; if it's on the stand and I give it throttle it revs up fine. Also, it's much worse in higher gears... I can ride and give more throttle in 1st or second.

Almost sounds like the throttle diaphram is leaking air somewhere, top of seal area, apply a little grease to grove to help hold in place, ensure there are no tears / cracks.
Just a guess.

dakar coverage 2011
Since this devolved into NASCAR without anyone answering the original query... I'll throw down for ya!
I've also been disappointed in how little coverage is available on tv - so I cancelled it.
I now watch the Dakar here: http://www.sbs.com.au/dakar/#
Click on the videos link and you have access to videos recapping every stage in the race. What's more, is the coverage is divided into bikes, cars, and trucks, so each stage has 3 videos (one for each vehicle type). Means you don't have to watch all the cars or trucks if you don't want to.
Enjoy!
