OK so my engine is in good shape but 31k miles.
Pep Boys had car Mobil 1 on sale for 4 bucks a quart.
5-30wt
Will it develop an oil leak or will the clutch slip if I use it?

I'd use 10W-40 or I'm told that there is a synthetic 10W-50. I think that 5W-30 is too light. That weight might be OK in a car motor, but in the KLR's case and in many motorcycle engine except some BMW units, the oil does double-duty: engine and transmission. Go heavier!

<><><><><> <><><><><> Jeffrey #3, I suppose you could get an oil leak but I guess it'll be ok. Also doubt the clutch will slip because of the oil. But that's a 30 weight oil which in my opinion is too light for a KLR. I'd be betting you'd score the cylinder and or cam journals with prolonged use. I think 5w30 is too light. I also think 5w30 Mobil 1 is one of the oils with a lot of friction modifiers, which might make your clutch slip.

Fleet Farm has Mobil Delvac 15w40 diesel engine oil on sale for $10.99per gallon. Would that work or us the 15 part too thick for cooler temps?

Hi Jeffery,
Different formula's of Mobil 1 are different...
I've been using Mobil 1 15-50 in all my bikes for years. The 15-50 does not have any friction modifiers so it doesn't screw up the clutch. Look for the round label on the back. If it doesn't say "energy saving", your good to go with a wet clutch.
While I hate Wally World, I do go into there for one thing. They sell Mobil 1 in a 5 quart jug for a very good price. Almost get one quart free when you buy it that way.
Enjoy.

15 to thick?: It's like 10/40 in your car, it adjust to the temps. STRAIGHT 15weight, would be Too thick.

Mobile 1 aside, I recall you live in California--and 5w30 is not the oil wt for S. California. Most of our recent oil discussions have pivoted around 40w shearing to 30w--which is unacceptable for engine long life and smooth shifting. Look at your owners manual for the ambient OAT that is most likely where you will ride. Even if it were free, 5w-30 would not be the oil to use, unless nothing else were available = better than running without. ymmv. revmaaatin.> > OK so my engine is in good shape but 31k miles. > > Pep Boys had car Mobil 1 on sale for 4 bucks a quart. > > 5-30wt > > Will it develop an oil leak or will the clutch slip if I use it? > > Jeffrey #3 >
