I spent a week there at an air and space conference about 15 years ago. All I can tell you is the locals pronounce the town as "Norfuck." Mark At 4:09 PM -0800 12/15/10, Thomas Komjathy wrote:

"Nawfick," spoken snappily and with less emphasis on the second syllable.   You can tell the real locals because they pronounce the nearby Portsmouth as "Porchmuff." TK, you'll love the traffic in the Tidewater area; lots of water to get around when driving places.  Lots of military installations and the lovely Virginia summers with plenty of 95F/95% humidity days.  Actually, the old downtown and residential areas of Norfolk proper are pretty nice with tree-lined streets, but the Tidewater area is a megalopolis.  Great access to various bodies of water, both fresh and salt.   Stephen (90 miles away in Richmond, pronounced Richmond)

#ygrps-yiv-2066139890 p {margin:0;}The award for weird and inconsistent pronunciations goes to the Boston area. Gloucester = Glah-stuh Worcester = Wooh-stuh Dorchester = Dor-ches-tah Peabody = Pibuhdee (all run together and really quick) Reading = Redding Concord = Con-khahd Sudbury = Sud-bry Chatham = Chattum etc, etc. -Jeff Khoury From: "Stephen Grisanti" To: "Thomas Komjathy" , "Tengai Mark Van Horn" Cc: "dsn klr650" dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Thursday, December 16, 2010 7:35:21 AM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] NKLR - Norfolk Virginia   "Nawfick," spoken snappily and with less emphasis on the second syllable.   You can tell the real locals because they pronounce the nearby Portsmouth as "Porchmuff."
