cheap oiler for poor bikers fyi
This is an interesting piece of kit.
People, of course, have different applications. My initial impression
from the perspective of long distance riding is that the Tutoro
applicator is a weak point.
Loobman (loobman.com) -- a similar product -- is also dual dispensing
system but its dispenser is more field serviceable as the part of the
dispensing system which actually touches the sprocket -- and wears out
-- are simply two pieces of cable tie (nylon zip ties) cut to size.
I used this system on a fairly long trip through the Americas and had to
service the oiler multiple times. In future I might carry a spare head
(the part that holds the cable tie pieces) as the location, regardless
of what system you are using, is vulnerable to stones, mud and other debris.
Dispenser not working correctly? Pull over at a gas station, put on
nitrile gloves, clean of some gunk, perhaps straighten some things out
and simply extend, or replace, worn oil applicators as needed.
What else? Loobman's profile does *not* fit my DR-Z400 as well as the
KLR. Maybe the Tutoro would fit better. Lube used? Transmission oil.
Seems to work well and is available wherever internal combustion
engines are found. Tried bar oil as well for a bit.
Long story short, I don't recommend going on any long(-ish) trip without
an automatic oiler (of your choosing). Let's say on average I oiled the
chain once a day -- it was often twice or more -- that would be a
tremendous amount of time (more than 1/2 day in total) and effort
(especially if the bike had to be unloaded each time). And a lot of
$10-15 spray cans. Versus a $30 system and $7 of tranny oil with what
can essentially be a "squeeze and go" operation.
