gas - probably as bad as a oil thread
Recently filled up the 08 with the highest octane gas available as I was
feeling like
giving the beast something different. Although not scientific in nature
I could feel
a difference on the 2-3 mile ride home. The biggest thing I noticed, and
I am not
shitting ya, is that the slight 'backfire' I have had for a while is
totally gone. I
went around the block a few times to verify that it was gone and it's
gone. I had
posted a while back about backfire and had taken advice and tightened up
muffler fittings but it still backfired a little bit.
What gas does one choose and is it worth the extra for the what the
manufacturer
considers better. Guess this would be a good question for both bikes and
cars.

Jim,
I noticed the same thing on my 06 but I think some of the backfiring may be due to the ethanol in the gas at certain stations.....I usually have good luck at Exxon with 91 octane...I don't think they run ethanol in their gas....when I fill up at Shell or Fina with their 90 octane with ethanol I tend to get a backfire upon decel....it also backfires when I add Seafoam .

As i always have a wee bit of Seafoam in the tank. I guess I am freaked that the
gasoline was making that much difference, never knew!!!!!

Now, it's important to make the distinction between popping in the muffler and an actual backfire, which comes out like "sput!" through the carburetor. Real backfires are usually a symptom of weak valve springs/maladjusted valve clearance or improper valve timing.
Exhaust popping is usually due to mixture issues or loose exhaust fittings.

I noticed the same thing on my 06 but I think some of the backfiring may be due to the ethanol in the gas at certain stations.....I usually have good luck at Exxon with 91 octane...I don't think they run ethanol in their gas....when I fill up at Shell or Fina with their 90 octane with ethanol I tend to get a backfire upon decel....it also backfires when I add Seafoam .

My bike never backfires. I do get exhaust popping when it's cold, only on deceleration. This is due to not-quite-fully-burnt fuel collecting in the muffler, caused by incomplete atomization of the fuel because of the low engine temp (according to my reading).

gas - probably as bad as a oil thread
I have an 07 and have always used regular 87 octane until a few week back when I decided to try premium 93 octane. Well, I got a speeding ticket, 54 in a 35. The bike runs so much smoother now, I find myself going faster. I need to watch my speedo now because the feel is different. Also, I never was able to ride below 50mph in high gear without the engine kicking and banging. Now I can ride in the low 40s with no problem. I would like to go back to regular gas (I'm cheap) and was thinking retarding the timing may allow the bike to behave better. Can the bolt holes in the ignition pick up sensor be elongated to allow for a few degrees change in timing? Craig

Only if you fill up a truck or a motorhome !!!! I'll spend the extra couple bucks to fill up my KLR just b-cuz it runs so much better on 91 octane ....

gas - probably as bad as a oil thread
First off, don't forget to get rid of the previous messages when
replying. The "digest" for this morning was 16.3mb because of it....
Anywho, back many years ago octane levels came up on the XR650R group.
Someone said "you're wasting your money running high octane on a stock
compression motor, you're losing mileage". We all guffawed and did as
our 'Ya gotta run the high octane" programmed minds were supposed to do.
Well, several of us played around and came up with a common consensus
that the bike actually did get better mileage from regular fuel. I gain
5 miles to a tank riding off road.

A stock KLR has a 9.5:1 compression ratio, so I don't think at stock configuration one will see any benefit to running higher octane gas. Remember, higher octane gas is not better per se, it just ignites at higher conditions. Now, many of y'all have non-stock configurations, so you may see benefits.
The biggest benefits I see are from non-oxygenated (ethanol free) gas, not higher octane. I don't notice it in performance, but it sure doesn't gum up the carbs in my small engines and bikes with smaller carbs.
