oil filters
When I saw filters at Advance, I bought a couple even before I bought the
09' KLR. $5.95 is a bargain!
There are several of those stores in town. So, I can shop around and not
wipe out a single inventory.
That said, they are Fram brand and include a new cover o-ring. The factory
filters and K&N filters do not.
I like the construction of the K&N, though. The filter material looks less
likely to "shed" (for lack of a better description)
and get caught somewhere.

Watch out with those Fram filters. I had a problem with them not fitting
my KLR 250, uses the same filter as the 650. They were too long and could
not get the cover to seal. Go to BikeBandit.com and get some of these,
http://tinyurl.com/n5omcr , nice quality filters at only $2.63 ea. At
that price get a bunch, and get a 10% discount with your AMA membership.
Your all AMA members right?

Have fun & Ride safe, Anthony

I happened to have a Fram and a OEM filter for a side by side comparison
and Anthony is right. The body of the Fram filter is ever so slightly
longer than the Kawasaki part. If you measure overall length grommet to
grommet, however, they are the same length. The Kaw. grommets protrude from
the filter more.
With the included Fram o-ring lightly coated with oil or a dab of grease,
the cover on my 09's filter housing goes down just fine. No leaks...so far.
I will get a K&N filter from the shop on Monday and take a three way
comparison photo for the list.

Fram CH6070 was the one I got. Napa claims to carry the Wix version of it
and Advance Auto Parts can order the Purolator version. All far cheaper than
what the dealer wants.

oil filters
As promised, I brought home a K&N oil filter to compare with the Fram and OEM Kawasaki filters in reference to overall length.

The Fram had the longest main filter body from end cap to end cap. The overall length was only slightly longer than the OEM
Kaw. filter, which had thicker grommets. The K&N filter body is slightly shorter than the Kawasaki filter. But, the difference grommet to grommet
is very small. I uploaded a photo to a new folder, Oil Filters, with a side by side shot of the three.

Observations:
Filter material of the K&N and Kawasaki filter papers seem less "fuzzy" than the Fram. For lack of a better description.
The two aftermarket filters have more pleats than the Kaw. filter and the Fram filter has thicker grommets than the others.
Fram came from Korea. The K&N Thailand and the Kawasaki ???. There's no marking on the box. Go figure.
Only the Fram includes a new cover o-ring.

Tidings from West Michigan   In "MCN" they did a reveiw and liked a tool made to cut the end off of oil filters. Besides the spark plug, we can learn alot, about whats going on inside the engine, tranny. (Like a blood test)   So, it makes Me think more, about the re-usable, stainless steel one, that you would open to clean out,  rinse it into a coffie filter, (in a motel sink, LOL Kidding) so you can see, whats in side of it, metal, clutch material, etc.   Thoughts??

The SS oil filter for the KLR is not able to be taken apart.  I believe that the oil flows from the outside to the inside of the KLR oil filter.  I have seen the gunk that these SS filters have separated from the oil and it is amazing to see sometimes.  A paper towel and some contact cleaner will show you bits and pieces that you may not want to see.
