tires...

Post by Jason Smith » Wed Mar 12, 2003 4:01 pm

I recall seeing awhile back a deal going on the OEM tires both front and rear shipped for $100. Does anyone recall this and where to find a set as for that price the 3,000 mile max tire isn't that bad of a deal. Does any one know what these tires were rated as? I'd class them at 40 off/ 60 on. If they aren't available anymore at that price what is a good 50/50 alternative that might get me some more miles for the $. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks, Jason Smith A-17 Bogalusa, LA

Try IRC GP110's, Kenda K270's ($34/$48 shipped from azmotorsports.com) or Pirelli MT21's ($50/$56 shipped from azmotorsports.com). I just put on a set of MT21's on my A12 and so far (11 miles ;) they're impressive, the only time I notice that I'm on knobbies is while slowly rolling in traffic. Z DC A5X A12X

Back when I had a XL600V Honda, I tried and thoroughly enjoyed Avon Gripsters. Decent mileage, traction and with the limited amount of off-road riding I did, they served the Transalp and me quite well. Naturally, when I bought the new KLR last year, I was inclined to order a set to replace the comparatively short-lived OEM Dunlops.
The Avons may last longer and do nothing scary. But, they have a completely different "feel" on road than I recall. Maybe it's due to the 8 years since I last experienced them. The difference in bike weights could be a factor, too.  The profile of the tire is more rounded than the Dunlops and make the KLR turn in more easily - almost too easy. I'm running 29/33psi and drop that a bit for dirt road use. It sounds nuts. But, I kind of miss the less round profile of Dunlops. With < 1,000 miles  on them , I don't have a clear idea how long they'll last. So far, so good. Do I regret my relying on a memory? Not at all. Just replaying my experiences for the KLR newbies like myself.

That's one of the most wonderful things about KLR ownership. When you have an inexpensive and reliable bike, your world becomes centered around the oil level window and tires. A few years ago I bought a set of 4 tires for my 1990 Pontiac Grand AM. I told the dude behind the Discount Tire counter that I wanted the cheapest tire that would fit the rim. I left with a set of "Metric" brand tires mounted with lifetime road hazard and balancing for $112. I would drive to campus 20+ miles in Houston traffic... hitting 80+ mph on occasion to avoid being killed. Car drove funny. Had a bulge in the sidewall. Replaced for $7. It seemed that about the time the tread started to wear on that car I'd hit 90mph for a second, separate the belts and go get a new tire...for less than $12 every time. I kept brand new tires on that car for over 4 years for less than $200. Then I got married. My self induced sense of responsibility spurred me to put a set of Micheline Aqua Treads on the wife's Camry. $520 Then I got another pickup truck... and would let the wife use it on occasion... Bridgestone ATs. $$$ I've had Continentals on a Harley Davidson. They were expensive, but they lasted. I have NEVER spent so much money on rubbers since I bought a KLR (and you thought I was going to say college.) Mech Like the slogan at Nuthin' Flat motorcycle tires and accessories, Cumming, GA says... "A busted rubber brought you into the world. Don't let one take you out"

Heck that's nothing, I drove from Texas to California at 90 mph in my 57 chevy chasing my girlfriend / present esposa on recaps and swap meet used tires. None were the same size with the left front the smallest (for dirt track styling). It was destroyed in Guadalupe pass in Tejas on the way back. There is a God. Also, I doing redneck research discovered going home from the bar that.....it isn't a good idea in an RX7 to have 2 new Brigestones on the front with 2 slicks on the back when you lock up the brakes. I looked really NASCAR and avoided everyone. There is a God. I ride all my bikes with good tires. I don't want to temp God much more. I think I am using up my scorecard. Message Seeing as I started this thread and I have received many good ideas as to tire selection and other links, I'd just like to say "much thanks" to the list! I doubt any other of my inquires will get this much response but let me say I think I will enjoy this motorcycle VERY much.   Any good pictures of mods done to the bike for long distnace riding? Bags, GPS, Spot, Alaska?   RJ Kochen 08 Kawasaki KLR650   *   99 BMW R1100rt   *   81 HONDA CB900C IBA   *   BMWMOA   *   KCBMWMC  *  KC HOAME Club   *   AMA   *   RomeoRiders
