dual disks up front
Hello,
I've been wondering if it's possible to run dual disks up front. With all the knowledge on this group, I'm pretty sure it's already been contemplated, if not already completed.
I have a spare set of forks, rotor, wheel, and caliper. Looks like I'd need a hub with 2 disks to respoke to my rim, and a splitter or new set of hoses?
Just wondering what it'd entail, I'm probably being overly simplistic on the requirements, but just wondering if it's both cost and time worthy.
Thanks,
Harry in Germany

Good morning Harry, Problem with using the spare fork you have, I assume it's off a KLR, would be one calliper would be ahead of the fork and the other would be mounted behind the fork (stock position) since the fork with the calliper boss on it is a left side fork.....have a great day....Greg

That is a question not too many people are asking. The stock set-up will lock the front wheel on most bikes. The aftermarket big rotor kits will improve fade resistance and modulation, and probably lock the rest of the front wheels. How much better can the braking get on a skinny 21-incher? Good enough to justify the added unsprung weight of another caliper and rotor?

My experience is; the larger rotor gives the KLR all the braking power it can use on dry pavement. It can take the front tire to threshold breaking, anything beyond that is a pure front tire skid. Get a rotor kit with some good pads and it will stop fine.

Harry,
If you could locate a wrecked Honda Transalp, you might could fashion a new
front end from the pieces. The 1989 XL600Vs I had came with a single disc.
Later models, not sold in the USA, came with dual discs and the same size
front rim as the KLR. If I recall, they also had a 41mm fork. So a
different triple clamp set may be needed. All in all a $$$ conversion. That
said, have you considered a relatively simple oversized rotor conversion
for the single disc? A bigger rotor with aggressive pads would slow the
beast down nicely!

Hey Harry In Germany....
Adding the oversized rotor and a Galfer SS brake line really hauls my stock KLR down from speed (if you can call a KLR speedy) very quickly. Adding an 18" rim and 120/70 series sticky Michelin to my "street-ified" KLR let's me do stoppies with it. Somebody has posted pix of both my KLRs, but i don't remember on who's site.

If the need to weld lugs on the front of your fork lowers didnt put you off the idea then this should.
To double the calipers at the wheel you double the amount of fluid that the master needs to impart to the system. That means that at best your brake lever needs to move twice as far. Bad case is the lever doesnt move far enough to apply eaither brake. Worst case is even if it moves far enough it doesnt supply enough force to push both wheel calipers. Highest recomendations for not going down that path.
Use the solution many on the group have done by buying the brake upgrades for your bike. Alternatively you can use the solution others in the group have used and buy an 08 or later. The brakes are dramaticaly better, even though they are single disc in the front still. Two discs is one too many!
