I'll be 65 next month and have just bought my second KLR,had one about six years ago but the seat height scared the hell out of me. Put the lowering links on this one but with me on and the thing loaded up it was kissing the the road at every opportu'nity,the lower seat will be the next thing to try but which one. The Africa at Arrowhead,Corbin,or some other manufacturer,anybody else have an opinion on this I'm about 5' 8" with a 30" inseam,love the KLR but need to get more Footsy on Ze ground. Has anyone modified the stock seat?have friend who did his,another model of bike with a sander attachment on a drill,looks ok from what i saw.                                                      Thanks Stu. I am turning 64 in a few days. 4 motorcycles in my garage. Old Yamaha IT 175, 99 KLR with 53,000 miles, a 2001 Concours with 55,000 miles and a brand new (well for me) '09 Versy. That bike is fun. I'm so old I don't like to drop them anymore so careful what i get into with the KLR. I looked at a Honda 230 today. Light and fairly low seat height but too much money. $4900. Probaly need to sell something. Criswell

I'm 56 this year and am wondering about the youngest and the oldest on the list? This is my 3rd KLR as I keep them for a while and sell them when I need money for a kids car at high school graduation! One more to go and then the KLR gets replace the the BMW GS800!

Hi Stu~ I just finished shaving the seat on my A19. Yesterday I tested it out and it turned out great! Took it out yesterday and it's the first time I've been able to ride farther than 10 miles without my tail bone hurtin' like crazy. Took three different sessions to get just the right amount of foam cut out from the underside of the seat. I ended up removing a block of foam 14" x 7" X 2 inches thick! I used an electric turkey knife to cut the foam. Stapled the cover back on (3 times) and got it right! Pulling the foam off the seat pan and removing foam from the underside left the seat looking stock until you sit on it and it's so much more comfortable. Attachments : Steve thanks for the info,i just downloaded the photo so i could see it.so what i need to know from you is did this lower the seat height also as i think i was going to take it off the top,did this to the KLR i had a few years ago and while it did lower the seat height it was almost as uncomfortable as in the stock height. I think that when i cut it down from the top i cut into a harder foam area so there was not enough cushioning,just a guess as i have no way of confirming that.                                                     Thanks Stu. Stu~ Yes, it lowered the seat height about an inch when I'm sitting on it but it springs right back to look normal when unoccupied. I've already lowered it about 2 inches with the dog bones and forks and I'm thinking I might be able to remove those mods because the seat is lower (when I'm on it). I would definitely take the foam off the bottom because that leaves the natural seat shape for the cover to fit back on. Plus, it would be real easy to cut a  block of foam to fit the seat cavity and everything would be back to stock. I didn't notice any difference in the density of the foam from top to bottom.
