lost foot peg fix.

Post by Jeffrey » Mon May 24, 2010 6:01 pm

After a boulder attacked my foot peg and rear brake lever, mount, master cylinder, I had to ride all the way through Sonora pass without a rear brake or foot peg. Sonora Pass (el. 9624 ft. / 2933 m.) is the second-highest highway pass in the Sierra Nevada, lower by 321 ft. (about 98 m.) than Tioga Pass to the south. Repaired at a friend's house in Berkeley...I just drilled into the soft nuts and tapped to the next metric size bigger. The black allen bolts sure seem stronger. I have not had a problem since; even though I have soft nuts...put on 23,000 hard miles since. Jeffrey #

I have seen more rim tape problems with the rim tape under the rim lock than over the top. Using duct tape instead of a rubber rim tape is a bad idea unless that is all you have at the time. Duct tape usually has fibers woven in the tape that once they become wet will keep the spokes and nipples wet long enough to rust them. Trust me, you don't want rusty nipples. > There has to be a reason most all motorcycle manufacturers use rubber for their rim tape instead of duct tape. I can imagine the reasons some will say to use duct tape and it probably has lots to do with costs. You didn't hear it from me that there are a few KLRistas out there that are cheap. You tell'em Fred. I heavily advise you change that .98-$1.25 rim strip AT LEAST every 5 tire changes...cough. hack. fuss. Really--at least every other tire change, if not EVERY change. Examine the strip with a magnifying glass; pull on it and see if you can see some stress marks in the rubber I would imagine some of those folks would/might buy a $6 beer at the ball park and then cheat on a duct-tape rim strip. They would also 'hope' they don't rub a hole in the tube on a dark and stormy night. Duck tape is for McGivering; timely parts replacement are for the rest of us that hate to walk or push our pigs. You have to walk or push that pig very far and it will make you a beliver in a strong maintenace ethic. It's your pig. Part-it or tape to your hearts desire. I've replaced parts in the garage; I've been stranded because things I should have been watching closer, come unglued. sigh. The garage is much better...fewer bears and mosquitoes as well. revmaaatin.
