engine cutting out?
I have a problem with my 2001 KLR650. It starts fine, and idles
great but when I try to apply any throttle it seems to cut out
eventually dying all together. The carb. has been professinally
cleaned, new spark plug, wire, etc. It appears to be some type of
ignition problem, but I can't seem to isolate it. Ideas anyone??
The kicker is that if the choke is left in the full on position it
seems to help and will rev up better but again will eventually die. I
thought ii was flooding at first but it still seems to be not enough
spark for the amount of fuel. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

engine cutting out?
I had the same exact problem and it was a tear in my carb diaphragm..john

engine cutting out?
Did you replace the diaphram or patch it ?
NAPA is said to have a patching material for flexible rubber stuff
like that.

engine cutting out?
When my carb diaphragm got a split in it in July, the bike started, idled,
and ran fine. Never did cut out. Just didn't have any power. Top speed of
60 mph, and was slow to get there. Rode it about 500 miles like that. The
split, or tear, was close to the outer edge and only about a quarter inch
long or less. The way I understand it, a hole in the diaphragm keeps the
slide from opening more than the minimum, but does not affect the starting
or idle.
Just a guess, but it sounds to me more like a fuel delivery problem, like
plugged slow jet, improper float level, or fuel not getting into the carb.
Have ya checked to make sure that the vacuum line to the fuel valve isn't
pinched?

engine cutting out?
While running a sixty mile section on the freeway this afternoon at 80mph, 85 degrees and fighting strong crosswinds the engine started cutting out I slowed down pulled over to the side of the road after a short time 5 or 10 seconds engine started running fine again, this happened twice this afternoon.
I ran the same freeway in the opposite direction early this morning doing the same speed 80mph, 50 degrees and no winds KLR ran fine with no problem.
My thought is it sounds like fuel starvation to me.
Mileage running at high speeds 80 mph was 44mpg.
I added 6 oz of Sea Foam and topped off the tank.
Suggestions?

Something similar has happened to a lot of us. It is probably fuel starvation possibly caused by fuel vaporizing in the tank or fuel line in the heat. A lot of heat spills off the engine and radiator. The wind could be contributing by directing the heat onto the fuel line. This is a hard problem to pin down because it seems to depend on a combination of conditions that are not readily duplicated.
Somewhere in my kit, I still have a piece of insulated bubble wrap, carried with intention of wrapping it around the fuel line the next time it happens to see if insulating the fuel line has any effect. Others may have already insulated their fuel lines, but there is no clear evidence that they have solved the problem.

engine cutting out?
If it does it again, stop, open the gas cap and see if it will start. If it does, your vents in the cap are not working properly.

engine cutting out?
Sunday was our first hot day hear in MN. When I parked my KLR someone commented on the moaning sound it was making, which I traced to the fuel cap. Clearly it was not venting with a good clean flow. The vent hole next to the fill opening is clear, so the problem seems to be with the cap itself. Is that fixable?
This condition also leads to hard starting when a vacuum is created in the tank as the fuel cools.
