did i ruin my agm battery?
Getting ready for a ride yesterday I discovered I had left an electrical accessory turned on after the last ride and it had run my one year old AGM battery pretty much dead. After charging over night the battery is still very low.
Anyone have experience with deep cycling an AGM? Will the battery recover, or is it done?

Something similar just happened to me. A bike sat with the key on overnight. The small AGM battery was dead flat, and 3 days on a battery tender would do nothing for it, not even light up the neutral light. So I let it sit for 3 hours on a big battery charger, one capable of 10 amps or so. It started right off drawing 7amps, then settled down to about 4, more than I like to charge a small battery at, but hey, I was desperate. When I got home, it was drawing about 1 amp, suggesting a fully charged battery. The bike popped right off on it. Now the charged battery has stood overnight. After reading your post, I went out and put the Fluke meter to it. 24 hours after charging, it reads 12.7 v at rest, 13.4-13.7v. at a fast idle, about 2200 rpm. I didn't have another pair of hands available, so I didn't check the cranking voltage, a better test of the battery's condition. But for now, it is acting like a good battery. The jury is still out until I test it a bit more, but it has 1) held a charge overnight; and 2) given all the right answers to the limited tests I have done.> > DualSportNews' KLR650 Discussion List > > Getting ready for a ride yesterday I discovered I had left an electrical accessory turned on after the last ride and it had run my one year old AGM battery pretty much dead. Hot batteries are such a problem, that many are actually temp monitored in many aircraft. I don't know if this was a consideration, but I see the 10a charger on the small battery is going to create some real heat. = scary amounts of heat. Personally, If I were going to try this, I think I would: put that battery in a bucket of water ~4/5 the way up the battery, hook up the charger, then plug it in. The water would act like a heat sink and might keep the battery from getting way 2 hot. Note: unplug the charger before reaching into the battery/water bath. revmaaatin.> > > > --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Lars Lemberg" wrote: > > > > DualSportNews' KLR650 Discussion List > > > > Getting ready for a ride yesterday I discovered I had left an electrical accessory turned on after the last ride and it had run my one year old AGM battery pretty much dead. That charger has a 50A boost function that probably would have done that. This one might have generated some heat, too, if I had left it on there long enough. Instead of a bucket of water, I just left the premises, and made a point of shutting it off before it had a chance to pickle for too long.> > Judd, > That must have been on that DR350, I am surprised that 10A solution would work.... :~\ > Q. After reading the comment on the use of a 10A, 50A boost perhaps making all ok, I think I'll pop in here and mention one of the quirks of the small smart chargers (battery tender, battery minder, etc). At least 2 of which I'm aware will not charge AT ALL if the battery voltage is below about 10V, thus they will not do anything with a dead battery. What I've seen recommended, and found to work once, is to put a plain old 1A trickle charger (in my case, it was a 0.5A) for roughly 200% of capacity. So our 13AH or 14AH battery would get 2 days with my half amp charger. On the wavverunner a friend had, it perked up and ran fine for several more years.> 3a. I had to get a bigger charger. I had the Battery Tender Jr and it just wasn't moving the needle. When I got the full Battery Tender my AGM charged up with no problem. To this day I don't know if the charger was bad or if the AGM battery just needed better amperage. It could also have been that programming on the Jr. couldn't deal with the AGM.

DualSportNews' KLR650 Discussion ListMy charger is 2/10/50 amp. The 50 amp
is a short duty cycle boost only, the 2 and 10 amp settings automatically
taper to trickle as the battery charges. I put it on the 10 amp charger
setting and it pulled about 5 amps. An hour later it was down under 2 amps
so I switched to the 2 amp setting and left it overnight. It started just
fine the next day, went for a two hour ride. It sat overnight with no
charger, and still spins the starter pretty well this morning. Maybe it has
some life left in it.
