I keep a quart in my top case for top-offs. I keep a close eye on it and make a habit of checking it every time I fuel up. ~~~Around town my 08' KLR uses very little oil. First time I rode it outta town using slab, I rode up to Barber's museum riding mostly slab...about 500 one way miles. Never really noticed much oil consumptioon until the return trip home...@ 800 miles into the trip I bought gas and had to top off oil...it took better than a pint One thing I did with my KLR for break in...on the way home from the dealer riding the KLR that night, I did the moto tune man's break in. In other words, I rode all back roads so I could stay in the lower gears and I wound the motor up as high as it would rev then throttle chop completly for major engine de-cel braking, not using the brakes. Back and forth, back and forth like this 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear, about 20 one way miles home...drained the oil a day or so later...maybe had 30 + miles on the oil when I drained it and changed the oil filter IMO, that really helps seat the piston rings, and as tight as that new motor was, I could never get it up to red line. As far as that goes, I have about 11 K miles on this bike and I don't think I have ever come near red line. I've ridden it at 6 K RPM's just to let it spin but most of my riding is at 4-5 K RPM's, usually the lower figure As someone here recently merntioned, there was a batch of -08' KLR's that had poor quality piston rings, and cylinders installed from the factory...that was the rumor, out of round bores, poor ring sealing ability, that drank *copious* amounts of oil I've yet to do the PCV mod but will some day. In the mean time, it doesn't bother me to have to dump oil in it purchased from a filling station during a road trip. I'm lucky if I do one road trip a year. Speaking of which, there's an RTE in Lavaca AL this weekend at Ezells. Good seafood. Ezells and Lavaca is about 12 miles east of Butler AL. Ive done this RTE (it's Greg Robert's) probably 5 times anyways. Always a good time. Am having a hard time getting a kitchen pass this year=:-( LD Rider will have the exact date, it's either Sat. or Sunday Jake Reddick Fla. Hafta ask Lord Algore: How many SUV's would it take to pollute the air as much as Eyjafjallajokull - The Iceland volcano? http://www.shakinjake.blogspot.com/

But, I overfill it a hair and I can go 1000 miles before needing to add oil. I use dinosaur juice 10-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the summer since I am mostly in SoCal weather. Thicker oil might help except in cold weather; then your starter can't. > > Remember that you need to let the bike sit at least 5 minutes after running it to let the oil settle before checking. > > 08s had an oil consumption problem and if you can beat the dealer up under warranty, you should. > > Jeffrey number 3 >
