Replaced the countershaft sprocket around 20,000. The rear is original. Did NOT want to carry sprocket PLUS chain and chain-tools on my AK trip! Cheers, Ed

I'm still running the stock rear sprocket.  53,000 miles and it still looks quite good!  Now at 2% stretch. Bill Watson Phoenix, AZ www.xanga.com/watt_man

Bogdan, YES - but dirt roads and dual-track, but not single-track. I ALWAYS spray down my chain and wipe it off after any rides of 50 miles or more (when I get home), and each night in camp while the chain's still hot, when doing trips like my Alaska and points north last summer. That included the Dempster Hwy which is 1,000 MILES of dirt, gravel and 'flint'! So far, I have 16,000 miles on my Versys on the same WD40 maintenance cycle, and have adjusted it ONLY 7 "flats" (one FULL turn of the adjuster is 6 flats). Last ride Saturday on the "V" included 80 miles of dirt roads here in AZ. Cheers, Ed

Lots of commuting on asphalt, (10,000 miles a year) and probably less than 500 miles of that was dirt.  Here there is no mud, it's either rocky, dirt or sand.  The sand is probably the worst stuff for my chain in my riding cycle.

Plus, not having much rain here probably helps - I'd think that riding in the rain has got to increase the crap being thrown on the chain as it runs by the front of the rear wheel.

Regimen: I spray the "inside" of the chain run with WD40 every "333" miles with the bike idling in 2nd gear on the centerstand.  THAT'S IT.  Pretty simple.
