what's a good bike for my son?

Post by The Reverend » Fri Apr 09, 2010 10:26 am

Have him take a look at the Aprilia Caponord and the Suzuki DL1000 (Vstrom). You could also point him to the Kawasaki Versys or the KTM Adventure. There are some BMWs too, the FS800 might be a good fit, but with the KTM and BMW I'd budget a shite-load more for maintenance. :) -----Original Message----- From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of kevbennett@... attempts to steer him toward the KLR have been unsuccessful. He likes the size, but says he wants something that will carry all 350 pounds of him at highway speeds. He thinks he will need something with 1,000 cc's. Is he right? Any recommendations?

I had a DL1000 from 2002 to 2008. It was a tall beastie with more than enough power to haul your son around. I belonged to that Yahoo! list and accidentally hosted the 1st V-Strom rally in N. Ga. (Invited list members to a Transalp rally. 7 confirmed on Wednesday. But, by Saturday, we had 21 show up - more than the Transalps!.) Anyhow, there was a list member quickly headed to 100,000 miles on his DL with most of those miles two-up with his wife. IIRC, he replaced the clutch and maybe a water pump. That was it. A few months ago, I saw a barely used DL1K for sale at a Honda/Suzuki dealership in Opelika, AL. The bike had <2,000 miles and was tagged $5000. That was a heck of a deal for a clean bike. I'm sure there are others like it. eddie

You're only about 5 hours from this place: http://www.trailsheaven.com I'd be there regularly if I lived that close. da Vermonster
