power loss at speed
hey all, been a long time since i posted around these parts, life has given me alot more stuff to do and the bike has been on the way back burner. summer is coming around and the bike has been in storage for almost 2 years now. so i got it out, cleaned it all up got it ready for a trip coming up in two weeks... went for a wee ride this morning and she is a dog!
so 1st and 2nd gear at any speed/rpm the bike seems to run fine.
however 3rd gear high rpm (4,000+) the bike starts to lose power. letting off the throttle the bike will start to speed up but when the RMP's raise again its starts to lose power again, shifting to 4th makes matters worse... letting off the gas and shifting down makes things better...
the bike STARTED to do this when i parked it almost 2 years a go.
I have pulled the carb apart and sonic cleaned it, adjusted all the valves, adjusted (while doing valves) the timing chain tensioner, oil change, filter, adjusted the clutch, adjusted choke.
I had the feeling that the valves were tight so thats the first thing i did, they were a lil bit tight but that had no bearing on the way it runs, second i figured the carb was gummed up but again no bearing on the way it runs. clutch is adjust to a good spot not too lose not too tight.
tank is coming off now, gonna replace fuel lines, overflow lines and vacuum lines, also going to take of tank valve to clean it while i wait for some responses.
I am running out of ideas.. I am at a total loss as to what it could be next. any suggestions?

Check the air filter.....mine did the same thing and it looked clean so I took it out temporarily and it ran great. Got a NEW filter and has been fine since.

hey all, been a long time since i posted around these parts, life has given me alot more stuff to do and the bike has been on the way back burner. summer is coming around and the bike has been in storage for almost 2 years now. so i got it out, cleaned it all up got it ready for a trip coming up in two weeks... went for a wee ride this morning and she is a dog!

the bike STARTED to do this when i parked it almost 2 years a go.

power loss at speed
My 2006 started acting like that: rpm plateauing at 5,000, then only 4,500, and then 4,000 in the course of three weeks. I too looked everywhere and didn't notice the small tears in the carb's diaphragm after two previous inspections. As they grew, more vacuum was lost, limiting how high the slide would rise in response to throttle position, and the peak rpms slowly dropped.
Kawi's diaphragm / slide combo is $132 but Harley dealers have parts for the same carb (1980s Sportsters). H-D's slide / diaphragm to fit Kawi's CVK40 is only $46.
Really inspect that diaphragm. You'd be surprised at how small a tear can be versus the amount of trouble it causes.

I had the same problem. I went to Napa and bought Plastic Dip #765-2527. I removed the diaphragm and slide from the carb still attached in one piece and left them that way. I cleaned the diaphragm with some alcohol. I sprayed some of the Dip into its cap. I then took a flat toothpick and with that handy tool applied it to the tear. I let it dry for about 1/2 hour and repeated the procedure. I let it cure for 4 hours and installed it onto the carb. Putting the carb cap back on is the tricky part of the job; take your time, be careful and use common sense. The carb has worked well for over 30k miles. I don't know if it will work on your wife's diaphragm. Bogdan> versus the amount of trouble it causes. >

A friend with a HD had a mouse issue recently. Turns out that one of the drawbacks of straight pipes is that mice can store all sorts of stuff inside. In his case the exhuast valve was open and one cylinder was full of seeds. -- Kevin Powers White Bear Lake, MNOn Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 4:10 PM, Thomas Komjathy wrote: Look for mice in your intake and a stuck slide TK

spot works
Ed,
PM my friend AJ.
aj@...
He is also known as REAPS at KLR650.net
He had the identical injury in 2006.
Riding friends: He picked up my bike after I broke a collar bone and 6 ribs. The day I went back to work (14 weeks later) flying medical helo's, his front wheel slid out in a gravel parking lot--and he did not ride for over a year. and you probably will not either.
His parents think I am hard on riding partners...I was not even there when he crashed!!!!
revmaaatin.

Kevin-- Oh, I would love to have seen the look on their faces when they opened up that rice, uh, seed burner. I was given a XR100 for my motorcycle ministry/children outreach and found that the air filter was chock full of dog food. Honda's will run on 'bad gas' but they definitely will not run on filtered dog food. Mice are not prejudiced. They will also fill ATV filters, and other various ranch/farm conveyance's. "Mice" come in more than one size... Not sure what Honda puts in their seat foam, but horses like the taste of the seat cover and seat foam. (The bike will run with chunks of seat foam missing....) revmaaatin.> > On Sat, Feb 27, 2010 at 4:10 PM, Thomas Komjathy wrote: > > > > > > > Look for mice in your intake and a stuck slide > > > > TK > > > > > A friend with a HD had a mouse issue recently.
