I can't remember for sure now, but I don't think the Trakmaster lasts quite as long as the K270, but I prefer the traction so I make that sacrifice. Just for clarity, I'm not a big fan of the Trakmaster on the front, only out back. da Vermonster

Of those two choices, I'd go with the 606 for sure. The 606 front is remarkably well behaved on the pavement and miles above the stocker in anything else. da Vermonster> > I have decided to stick with the TKC 80 on the back, but what's the > front? The set installed to replace those is an other set of 761's that were running at 36 psi front and rear with no traction issues, but I think I'll take a pound or 2 out of the back as the ride seems to have suffered a surprizing amount. I've run Dunlops, Michelins and currently Bridgestones on my street bikes and have had some degree of scalloping on all of the fronts. I believe it is mostly because I have always been hard on the front brake so while I agree that low pressure will make scalloping much worse riding style and road surface can play a large role as well......Have a great day.....Greg --- On Fri, 2/5/10, mark ward wrote: From: mark ward Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: tires, tires, and more tires To: "RobertWichert" Cc: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Received: Friday, February 5, 2010, 11:13 AM Doesn't "Scalloping" have to do with air pressure Etc.?? ~~~Sorry I'm a little late getting in on this thread but was skimming around, saw your post and thought I'd comment about the two new Kenda 270's I installed a few weeks ago Perusing posts over on KLRWorld forum I decided to go with the 4.60" rear 270 and the 3.25" front. If I had it all over to do again, which I will when this rear wears more=:-), I'll go with the 5.10, primarily as the 4.60 is a smaller circumference than the 5.10 and I'm losing approx 500 RPM's at 5 K RPM's...which means I'm losing on fuel mileage On and off road the 4.60 rear Kenda 270 is a good tire. No problems mounting it with the stock tube but due to it being smaller than the 5.10, go with the 5.10, they're about the same price and cionsidering the gearing effect, run the larger tire Now about the 3.25 270 front, it's a rather square shaped tire. fine for off road, makes turning on pavement tougher vs. a rounded profile tire. Again, the square shoulder makes this front tire reluctant to turn on pavement. Might be off putting for some. After you get used to it, no problem. I'm not sure if I would buy this front tire again. It does beat the hell out of the scalloped front oem tire that was on there before it though=:-) Jake Reddick Fla. The best set up I've found for off road worthiness while maintaining some semblance of road manners is the D606 up front and the Kenda K760 Trakmaster II on the rear. > > > > > > Mind you, I like to do some pretty hairy off road stuff including mud, sand, gravel, trees, rocks, etc. You may not need as much off-road traction as the above mentioned set up. Or for more off road traction, without the DOT rating, try a Michelin S12 up front with the Trakmaster out back. Jake, Now that is an interesting observation that give credence to one of my own observations w/ counter steering. Most (of my) earliest remembered counter-steers required a small amount of push or pull on just one handlebar (at least to my .cough. fine-tuned seat of the pants experience--from long, long ago. smile. Experience obtained--all before they made me fly big uglies and send me to foreign places. No time for m/c then, not even much time to think about them. Then, suddenly, after some years of m/c neglect (76-03) KLR's discovered me, and I went over to the dual sport side...consisting mostly K270's for the past 40K KLR miles. I have noticed that when I ride the K270 3.25, I observed that same reluctance you mentioned, cured by usually, AGGRESSIVELY and EQUALLY PUSH on one handle bar and PULL on the other. shrug. I refer that to that as brute-force-and-awkwardness principle vs finesse. Since the only other tire I had ridden other than the K270 was the stock OEM, I thought that aggressive push/pull was required for all applications....then I installed a set of D607's on a spare set of wheels. WOW. Don't push/pull with that same aggression! it will skid your shorts.... and I don't think I need to draw you a picture, or suggest you smell that rose. revmaaatin. oh but I love those 607's.> > > Now about the 3.25 270 front, it's a rather square shaped tire. fine for off road, makes turning on pavement tougher vs. a rounded profile tire.
