For what it's worth the tire pressure was perfect on my affected firestones when the side wall flew off of the left front tire one day.
Some Civics had the same issue but you didnt hear about it because the recomended pressure was higher so there were less reports. That and the tires suked so bad that most people who bought an EX just replaced them in 20-30k.
I dont think the tire pressure was the issue having looked at my tires. I think the tire pressure being too low on certain American SUV/truck models is what made that one blow up in their face on such a large scale. The tires were just not made well from what I saw.
The firestones I replaced them with were awsome. The only reason I got them was Firestone replaced them for free. For the price you can do much better.
Now I run Conti-contacts and I will never buy anything else. they are quieter and longer lasting. They grab like crazy in the rain/snow, a big one today in CT. and my mpg is up.

~~~I remember
Those folks were not checking air pressure. Happened often during that summer on hot Fla. interstates and other fast roadways. Until the public learns to care for their transportation, there will be more of it
It was unfortunate...there was a problem with the tires, no doubt but look at all of the folks that kept the tire pressure where it should be kept, they didn't have the catastrophic failures
