balancer system removal
Apparently, mine was off from the factory by one tooth on the crankshaft: the counter-balance lobes were properly timed to each other but not to the piston.
After correcting at 20K+ miles, I din't 'feel' a lot of difference (handlebars, seat, footpegs). Mirrors were a little better.

This is going to be a dumb question I'm sure, at least to many of you much more knowledgable than I, but do both versions of the KLR have 2 balancers or just the 08-09's? I knew a guy who took the balancer out of his Triumph Triple. Someone told him it would be lighter and thereby "go faster". I guess it was sort of a less weight more speed concept. What I remember is that in his case the damn thing shook like a dog Sh*tting peach pits.

I think the upper left balancer shaft bearing on my Tengai is shot. It looks like replacing this bearing requires splitting the engine cases. Not fun. That would be my reason to do it. A short chain could probably be run to drive the waterpump off the forward balancer shaft. For now, I'll just drop in the low-mileage spare engine I have. I just wish they would have made the balancer gear driven which I think would solved the one weak point of the engine. Wasn't the other 650 they made for a short while gear driven? Wasn't it called a KLX 650? Isn't the somewhat simpler DR 650 a gear driven balancer?

I keep rolling this over in my mind and can't think of one reason why someone would want to do that... -Jeff Khoury ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Komjathy" yahoo.com> To: "dsn klr650" ups.com> Sent: Friday, December 25, 2009 4:55:52 PM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Balancer system removal Has anyone ever removed the balancer system from the KLR, meaning, taking it out of thge engine and running without it> A well known engine builder I was talking to said it is possible to take the system out and run the engine without it. He indicated there would be a small amount of additional vibration, but not much. What say the collective? TKOn Dec 25, 2009, at 7:20 PM, Jeff Khoury wrote:

IIRC, the KLX650 had a single, gear-driven balancer.
You can find out for sure by working the fiche on ronayers.com. the KLX650 was available from '93-'96

Attachments :My trouble is that I don't have a large, clean work area in my
microscopic house and garage that's already packed to the rim with
$hit.

I would have bought it over the KLR as it seemed to have better
suspension and other stuff .......but the gas tank was too small for
adventure touring.
