balancer system removal

Post by Thomas Komjathy » Fri Dec 25, 2009 6:56 pm

Has anyone ever removed the balancer system from the KLR, meaning, taking it out of thge engine and running without it> A well known engine builder I was talking to said it is possible to take the system out and run the engine without it. He indicated there would be a small amount of additional vibration, but not much. What say the collective? TK

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> TK, The coolant pump impeller is run from the front balancer shaft. So removing the balancer system would probably require a new method to power the impeller. I think you could take the balancer system out but I can't think of a reason it would be worthy of serious consideration. I think the upper left balancer shaft bearing on my Tengai is shot. It looks like replacing this bearing requires splitting the engine cases. Not fun. That would be my reason to do it. A short chain could probably be run to drive the waterpump off the forward balancer shaft. For now, I'll just drop in the low-mileage spare engine I have. Mark

Good point, it was just a thought and wondered if anyone had tried it. It would require machining off the throw on the drive side to retain the gear and a spacer on the other side. ----- Original Message ---- From: Jeff Saline To: klrsisfiddy@... Mark What are the symptoms of the bearing going bad, I think I have a similar problem. I have a low-pitched rattle at idle, and the balancer chain has scored the engine case near the upper shaft, although the static tension in the chain is sufficient. I have yet to investigate further, but the next step would be to remove the chain & upper sprocket and see how much play there is in the shaft. Mark At 8:14 PM -0800 12/25/09, Thomas Komjathy wrote:

That sounds like what I am experiencing. Does the rattle, oscillate getting loader and and then becoming quieter, then loader. Mine has an oscillation of about a second between these loader/quieter transitions. I can also feel it in the chassis of the bike, I actually thought something else had come loose. Come on in. The water is fine. Splitting is easy, putting together probably requires replacing some case-to-case 6mm bolts around the front counter-balance. None of mine in that area could make it to 18 ft-lbs without popping. Don R100, A6F

After having ridden a KLR with the front balancer off by ONE tooth, I'd rather ride a washing machine in spin cycle with a concrete block in it. Just fix the bike.
