What sort of gun do you have to carry down there? It always sounds a bit dangerous down there (Shining Path), etc. We also have a local connection to "El Enigma de la Mariposa," or "The Mystery of the Butterfly." Don R100, A6F

Water is at its "largest" as steam, which is what made a lot of things possible back in the day. This aside, water is far "larger" as ice than as liquid: about 10%. That's why icebergs float with 10% (more or less) out of the water: they're 10% less dense. > > I've oversimplified horribly, of course, as is my wont. > > All of this doesn't alter the fact that, in the absence of really and truly compelling reasons to do otherwise, 50/50 antifreeze/water mix is a good idea for a wide variety of reasons. > > Mark > > (From Peru, where my road-weary KLR has survived multiple trips over 13 and now 14,000 feet without notable incident. overheating

Post by transalp 1 » Thu Dec 17, 2009 11:23 pm

The overheating bike thread reminded me of a weekend at Road Atlanta several years back. A friend and his wife were there with some amateur racers when the temprerature unexpectedly dipped below freezing Saturday night. Sunday morning, the PA speakers loudly cautioned riders to *not* start their bikes until the waterpumps had been thawed. Seems the mandatory water-only for track use had caused a bike or two to freeze up at the pump. When started, the impeller shafts promptly broke off - destroying the pumps. =(
