yes I am developmentally disabled. When I get the clip on, going around the pin bends it out so it's sloppy. Do I squeeze it with needle nose to unbend it? Last clip fell off. Any cure? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Sounds like you're not getting/keeping the clip in the groove. When I do them I slip them on and then pull the sideplate against the clip. Then I clean the clip and sideplate with some acetone and cover the clip with RTV. Haven't lost a clip since I started doing it this way. Matt, It sounds to me as if you are hooking one side of the clip onto the pin and then bending the other side outward (spreading the legs, as it were) to go onto the other side of the pin. That is damaging the clip. You need to lay the clip against the side plate with one of the pins between the legs of the clip. Practically all of the clip will be laying flat against the side plate. Then slide the clip so that the tips of the two legs are starting into the groove of the other pin. Then slide it the rest of the way to force the tips of the legs to spread apart while in the groove and the clip to move to its final position. This will keep the clip from being damaged. I hope this makes sense. Mike Martin Louisville, KY ________________________________ From: "matteeanne@..." To: Jeff Saline ; bmrbill@... I have had luck cleaning the side plate with a q-tip and some brake cleaner then putting a dab of silicone RTV sealant to help hold the clip in place. The clip should be slid in place laterally - first by placing centering a pin in the slot of the clip then pressing the clip sideways with some good, flat ended pliers. If the clip gets sprung / loses tension, it's cheap insurance to get a new one. $0.02, ymmv,etc... eddie

Also, if you look at the clip, it has been punched out in a punch press and has a sharp square edge on one side and a slightly rounded edge on the other. Put the side w/ the rounded edge against the side plate of the masterlink so the sharp edge is on the outside. The outward pressure is better retained by the very squae edge. I usually use a press to get the side plate on and have lost a couple of clips while the side plate remained in place, thankfully! I now rtv the side plate before installing the clip as well and no mo' trouble in 10K. Don M

When I've had a removeable circlip, I've 'safetywired' the sideplate in position and haven't had one leave...! Ed

Why come up with 101 ways to do a half-assed job of holding one of the most important parts of your bike together? Take the bike to a dealer and have him rivet the damn thing in place, just like the factory does it???? I watched a Harley bite the dust when his chain broke, and wrapped around his rear wheel. The clip-on links should be regarded as emergency use only. But I would be sure surprised if a KLR has the ability to break a chain. And if it did, it would be because of gross negligence of the owner, in not doing anything close to proper maintenance. Jeff A20. In a message dated 9/27/2009 5:46:28 P.M. A duckbill plier works really well for this task.

I may have said this before, but I have never lost a clip on an o-ring chain assembled with a press to seat the side plate back against the clip. That said, a rivet link is so easy to install that I only carry a clip-type master as a spare for the road, as the installation tools are lighter than a rivet tool.

. Jawbone area 10/24 25 October 8-12 heading up to Indian Grinding Rock campground to ride around the northern Sierras. November 5-9 heading down to Death Valley to ride into the hot springs and around the Panamints. Also, we were looking to do one of these though a couple of us already did the Pozo area with BMW motorcycle Ventura VCAR group. http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/lospadres/recreation/ohv/slrd/ Jeffrey number 4
