Wouldn't you know it?...
All of the thousands of miles I ride in some of the hairiest roads and trails, I crash 4 blocks from home. I was out running errands on Sunday and made a low-speed right hand turn through some water that had pooled in an intersection. Unfortunately, this water had been standing there for some time due to a drainage problem and snotty slick algae had grown on the street.
As soon as my front tire hit the algae, the front end washed out. I tried to recover, but the street was potholed and covered with gravel, so I couldn't get it to hook up. The back tire hit the Algae and washed out as well, at at that point it was all over. I low sided and went down hard.
I was wearing my armored jacket, which protected my elbow but the impact caused me to break my upper arm longitudinally (Like splitting a log). The luggage rack ended up on my foot and I have a little rash on my knee. It's funny that I know I took much harder falls in my childhood and I didn't break anything. I guess now at 39, it just hurts more.
The bike took about $400.00 of cosmetic damage, and after cursing like a sailor at the pain, I managed to pick it up and ride it home. I can still ride, but I have to place my right hand on the bars with my left hand, and then take off. Ugh. 6 weeks until the bone heals before I can do any serious riding... and I was gonna be going on an Iron Butt ride next month.
Just as a warning to other KLRistas, avoid the intersection of Mesmer Ave and Major St in Culver City. You can literally skate on the concrete in your boots!

Wow. Sorry to hear that Jeff. GOD speed on your healing.
You be the man though ! Riding with a broken arm, a scuffed knee, and i am sure a painful foot.
Hats off to you man. I am just a boy in comparison. I am sure i would still be laying there whining like a girl.
I will use the fact that I am 11 years older as my excuse. :- )

Ugh! Sorry to hear.
On the upside, you're still able to ride and the bike didn't suffer badly.
It almost seems more of a reinforcement of the notion of using gear and
exercise caution. Something easily said, but better understood after a
mishap.
Took me a month before I could get back on my bike after a lady on the
freeway decided she needed my lane more than I did (405 Northbound, just by
the 10).
After the month, I still couldn't bend my foot, but I had boots with an edge
by the sole, so I could lift the shifter with my heel.

There are low water crossings in the TX Hill Country that are
deadly ...... like ice slick. That stuff is bad (algae). Give me mud
or sand any day. Hope you heal quick.

If I hadn't been wearing my jacket, I would have shattered my elbow, without a doubt. I was wearing the FirstGear MeshTex Jacket. The elbow armor is thick and absorbs impact well.
It has my endorsement.

My armored pants came in a few days after the accident. Jeans don't hold up
well against pavement. Neither will Vans, one of which was wedged firmly
between the shifter and the engine case after grinding off the top of itself
against aforementioned pavement.
Armored pants and proper boots would've saved my leg and foot from damage.
The jacket saved my shoulder and elbow (I still use the same jacket, with
lots of street-cred and lots of wicking water when it rains) and oddly
enough the helmet never touched the ground.
I think that was the day I found my lack of religion.

Thanks for the tips. My doc said that there is no cast that will help this type of break, I just have to be easy on it and it will hopefully heal. He said that it "won't let you hurt it, at least right now" and he is correct. If I make the mistake of moving it the wrong way it feels akin to someone driving a steak knife in my deltoid with a ball-peen hammer.
If it does not heal on its own in 6 weeks, he will put screws in it.
After some investigation, it seems this intersection has a history of motorcycle, scooter, bicycle and pedestrian crashes. I talked with the people in the office on that corner, and they've all witnessed two-wheeled crashes there, and one slipped and fell just walking across the street.
What's that attorney's number again????

Jeff,
Sorry to hear about your slide. Get well soon!
They do say most accidents happen within 5 miles of your home.
I also had a wreck within 1 1/2 miles of my home on my previous K100rs at under 20 miles per hour around a blind corner on a country road with loose rocks from an embankment and a truck coming the other way about a foot over the line. Real slick and slippery tarmac. Just a quick lay down, with the bike sliding smack into the front of the truck and me sliding almost 30 feet parallel to the truck on my knees and elbows. It took me 6 months to get back on and start riding again....so hats off to you for getting back so soon.
From then on I almost always have worn my 1 piece Aerostich or at least an armored jacket and kevlar jeans, even to the store.
Hal
