Jonathan, congratulations for tracking it down -- because I think
you've got it nailed. My wiring-harness damage was not visible
either (and I've done my time as an electronics dweeb so I know how
to inspect wires), but I am fairly sure the actual problem was at the
forward edge of the gas tank which is a chafe point and probably a
wire-fatigue point. To this day I do not know whether I had an
open-circuit or short-circuit problem, but I do know that a brand-new
wiring harness with the ty-wraps (that should have been there in the
first place!) has utterly solved the problem [knock on
forehead]. Your symptoms (waggling bars to revive it) sound very
much like mine. So when the harness recall is done, I suspect that
the Beast will run just fine in spite of whatever you may do to it
with sprinklers

I went to drain the carb today before pushing the '07 KLR back into the garage and I only saw a small allen (hex)head screw near the bottom of the float bowl on the right hand side. Is this the correct way to drain the carb for temp storage or is this a jet?
I would like to make it a routine when putting it back in the barn to drain the carb - ran it dry but I doubt that gets all of the gas out.
