need a smaller bike nklr

Post by Craig Kahler » Sun Sep 06, 2009 7:54 pm

I'm considering giving up on the one bike does it all life, and getting a smaller 200-250cc enduro for most my off road riding. Most of the bikes I have been looking at are air cooled. My off road riding usually involves a lot of streams and mud puddles. The thought of a hot air cooled engine hitting cold water concerns me. Am I concerning myself with a non issue? I could see that as being a valid concern, but probably more in the longevity realm rather than an immediate damage concern. I can say, with reasonable certainty, that you'd be pleasantly surprised by the capability of the '09 KLX250S. Much easier to wrestle around off-road than any KLR and does surprisingly well on road, and over 70MPG. Dennis KD7CAC Scottsdale, AZ

I believe the "cold water on a hot engine" thing is an old wives tale. I've never heard of anyone having damage in this aspect. What happens every time someone drives their car through a slush puddle? Depending on how small is small, I had a CRF230 with street conversion that was a fun little bike in company with my XR650R. That bike is gone, traded towards a Ninja 650. I now use a KTM200 for the cut and thrust stuff, though my XR sees FAR more use because it is so versatile. Craig, YES - it's a non-issue! Ed

Mike- agree with all that Jeff said. Since you disconnected the rear spring it may still be stuck but likely the front sending unit. Just looked at mine and it's easy to take off & clean from under the brake lever. You replaced the standard bulbs w/ LCD so not sure if that might have a play in it or not? Safe travels! PS there's a ton of great riding on your way to UT. Hope ya get a chance to get dirty!. <>

Craig, Not only is it a non-issue, but I rode my air-cooled '84 Can-Am Qualifier 400 across the Bow River, and back, years ago, thru water that was OVER the engine (air intake was behind the headlight, thru the frame). Ed

Hi Craig.... I would have to say from my experience you have no reason to worry...I have an 84 KDX200 which has somewhere over 15000 kms on it, I used to get out several times a week and it saw more mud, water and streams then I care to remember. When I used to ride it a lot it got rings every year and a piston, pin and pin bearing every two years, the parts I took out looked great, good enough that a buddy of mine installed one of my take out pistons and put it in an old KDX he bought and ran it for several years. The last time I had the top end apart the coating on the cylinder looked great and since I don't run it much anymore I didn't even both with the piston. Have a great long weekend....Greg
