klr250 minimalist adventure

Post by Bill Watson » Tue Aug 18, 2009 2:59 pm

Rev, As always, I'm enjoying your trip report. Others are noting of 250-powered trips as well. I still have pretty vivid memories of riding my Honda XL175 from Phoenix to Crater Lake, OR in '74 and from Phoenix to Rapid City in '75 with my dad on his XL250. I put 25,000 miles on that 175! Your trip is reminding me of much of that, plus we took 250s to Moab this year so the memories are fresh as well. Thanks for taking the time to post it all... [dsn_klr650] stearns wal mart atv seat cover for klr’s

I don't have any pics, but I can describe how I ended up. The rear strap I placed right behind the two big studs on the bottom of the seat, with the rear of the cover flush with the rear of the KLR's seat. I tightened it to the point where the plastic clips rolled under the seat. The center strap I tightened where it fell, but not as tight. The plastic clips sit just outside the body plastics. I then attached the seat to the bike with the front strap not connected. I then ran the front strap down through the bike just above where the airbox attaches to the carb and cinched it down and tied off the tag ends. it feels nice and fits pretty well. I was considering taking the plastic clips and straps off altogether and lacing it to the seat with paracord, but I haven't decided on that just yet. -Jeff Khoury Astatic Solutions, LLC.

It looked nice in the photos so I said "What the heck" and ordered it. After all, what did I really have to lose, $20.00? It arrived about a week later, and I ran out and immediately installed it. It took about 30 minutes of fidgeting with it to get it in place the way I wanted it, and then the moment of truth. I sat on the bike and immediately noticed a difference. The seat feels firmer and wider with it on there. It did increase seat height by about 1/2". I have a 32" inseam, so when I'm wearing boots, my heels BARELY touch the ground. It also added what feels to be 1" to total width which is a welcome addition as well. It felt a little funny the first few rides I took with it on there, but I've gotten used to it now. The proof in the pudding came Sunday. I spent most of the day riding all over Los Angeles, putting in about 250 miles. The difference was astounding. No more hotspot on my tailbone. No more hotspots on my hip joints. A slight shift here and there kept me comfortable riding around all day. I only wish I had it for that 1200 mile Big Sur trip I just got back from. I wholeheartedly recommend this to the list members. It is far superior to a sheepskin and I can't say how it compares to a Corbin, but it is vastly better than the stock seat alone. I've had two people comment on it... one said he liked the "tread pattern". IMHO, it would be a bargain at twice the price. And no, I don't work for Wal-Mart or Stearns. -Jeff Khoury ----- Original Message ----- From: "eddiebmauri" < eddiebmauri@... > To: "DSN KLR650" < DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com > Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 10:20:39 AM GMT -08:00 US/Canada Pacific Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Stearns Wal Mart ATV Seat Cover for KLR s OK, y'all,,,,, for some time I have heard great things about the Stearns ATV seat cover that is said to fit well over the KLR's stock seat. I have seen a few of them on KLR's, the KLR riders who had them all swear by the seat covers. A poor man's Corbin if you will. Anyway, the problem was in locating the seat cover at Wally World. It seems that this is a seasonal item. Good news, the season has opened. I was able to order one on-line for about $20 including shipping! http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10727537 I'll let you all know how good they are once it arrives and I try it. But, come on, for $20 it is one of the least expensive farkles that I have bought.
