klr 250 minimalist adventure continues thursday 13 aug 2009

Post by Jeff Saline » Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:00 pm

Listers, We left Martin in Lafayette, IN with my last call from him on Tuesday evening. He had a leaking fuel tank and at about 11 pm his time was gathering supplies to effect a repair. He called me today, Thursday, at lunch time from Vinton, IA which is about 40 smiles NW of Cedar Rapids. He's still having an adventure and had about 185 smiles to go to this evening's destination. He said he'd have less than 400 smiles to go tomorrow to get home. Yesterday he started with a leaking fuel line at the fuel filter. He finally found some clear line from somewhere and it sticks to the petcock and fuel filter like it was glued in place. His JB Kwik fuel tank leak repair is holding well and he thought it was a manufacturing defect as it's right at a crimp/weld and looks like a small crater. We discussed how easy it should be to repair when he brings it here next week. Temp was about 85 degrees and he was standing in the sun with his riding pants on talking to me. He was a bit hot. I was too as I had to get out of the attic to answer the phone when I heard him on the machine. For South Dakota this might have been the hottest day of the year. He hasn't had any more rain but he said every direction he goes is a headwind. He's trying to run 55-58 mph with 6,200 rpm being 55 according to his GPS. He's hit 7 grand a few times and redline is 9.5K rpm. Fuel economy is between 51-70 mpg depending on lots of things. Martin made specific note that the KLR250 is a fun and enjoyable ride for this type of travel. Maybe more so than the 650 as it is lighter and a bit lower to the ground. He's now got the hang of the kick starter and thinks his son won't have an issue once he figures out the start sequence. Last night he stayed with a friend that owns a nut and bolt factory. Many of the employees ride V-Twins and when they went outside to check out his bike they were all amazed that he was riding that little bike from where to where??? : ) I think he got quite a kick out of that. He plans on writing some kind of trip report and posting to the list. He'll enjoy your comments and heckling. : ) Best, Jeff Saline ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT . ____________________________________________________________ Easy-to-use, advanced features, flexible phone systems. He's still having an adventure Hello List Thanks to Jeff and Fred, I have been posting 'absentee'. Thanks. Arrive Sioux City Iowa at 2120L. 12h+45m from start in Rockford, IL to SUX. Great conditions, 4th straight days of headwinds. sigh. Bike is running good. Most small problems sorted out. John Sadowoski, aka KLRBUGEATER called late in the afternnon--~2 hurs after talking to Jeff Saline-- while I was at a gas station and was encouraged to hear from him as well. I have been trying to ride ~100 miles before stopping. cough. Works early in the day--a difficult plan to follow after the first 250 miles (8 hours). When John called, it had been only 45 miles--since talking to Jeff. Later it would be only 38 miles befpr stopping. Prickly heat, sigh, Q. oh anti-monkey butt, where art thou? A. Sitting on my desk at home along with a couple of other necessary items.... I have a sheepskin pad, but after some 1300 miles on a KLR seat, it has become a tad uncomfortable. Mrs. Lincoln, Other than that (those items previously reported), it has been a great play. some 300 miles remain. Should be home by 1700. smile. should-- is a rather broad word. revmaaatin. ____________________________________________________________ Mortgage Refinance Refinance $200,000 for Only $926/month. 14 Aug 09 Hello List, Departed Sioux City, IA at 0845 Arrived safe and sound 1710. 304 miles. Last ~100 miles was a tail wind. Finally. Looks like ~1800 miles/5 days on a KLR 250. Going to get a shower, and if the brewing storm blows over, take the 13 y/o for a bike ride. Will post a little more later. revmaaatin.
