I think the gauge gets the power first and then it goes to the wire and finally to the sensor to find ground. I suppose it could be a loose connection near the gauge causing a false ground/reading but I haven't heard of that on the KLR before. Not like I've heard of all the issues on a KLR though either. : ) I suppose you could disconnect the wire at the temperature sensor and then see if you are getting any different needle movement when you turn the key on. With the wire disconnected you are eliminating the ground for the gauge so it shouldn't be able to read anything. If you still get a reading there is probably an issue with the wiring or gauge.
