leaking c/s seal

Hello List, Just got off the phone-- the KLRBugeater from San Diego will be in my South Dakota driveway by noon tomorrow with a vague description of "an oil leak near the drive sprocket" which I hope is the seal and not something bigger--like a crack in the engine case. (JB weld anyone?) Leaning towards the seal-- If I understand others, this repair is: 1) screw a large sheet metal screw into the seal 2)jerk it out 3) press a new one back in with appropriate sized socket/plastic tube 3a) anybody know that size off hand? Any other cautions? any prep for the seal? corrections? revmaaatin.

Do the easy stuff first. I'd check to see if the counter shaft nut is tight. If it has come loose, there is a good chance that the o-ring 92055-1293 (RING-O,21.5X1.5) between the counter shaft and the collar that is on this shaft is where the leak is coming from. Sometimes just tightening this nut will stop the leak and sometimes this o-ring has become damaged and will need replacing. If this o-ring is in good shape and the counter shaft nut is tight while you still have a leak, then I'd replace the counter shaft seal. Good luck, Fred www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Martin, I haven't done it but I think I'd take a look at a spare countershaft sprocket to get an idea of the size of the seal/driver. Remember it's the major inside diameter of the sprocket since the shaft will have splines sticking out on it. I'd probably try pcv pipe if it was available and close to the correct size. I think there is also an o-ring behind the seal but don't recall for sure. If I wasn't absolutely sure it was the countershaft seal leaking I probably wouldn't be pulling the one that's in place now. I would clean the entire area and then take a ride and see how it goes. One more factor to consider.... I too had an oil leak that I thought was the C/S seal, so went ahead and replaced this only to find oil continued to spill out from another source. More careful cleaning followed by examination of oil leakage revealed the tiny O-ring on the doo-hicky adjustment bolt was the problem. Once replaced no more oil leak. So it is worth the effort to determine the source of the oil leak before jumping in. Hi Brent, Read you 5x5. John arrived here by 1pm from SanDiego, back on the road by 4--sadly for funeral duty another 2oo miles towards Fargo. The long and short- We disassembled the chain/sprocket and throughly cleaned everthing--suspected that it is the seal at the shifter. After 200 mile more today, John believes it is the shifter seal. Film, later. smile. revmaaatin.
