Now, if they would put in dual fuel petcocks so you wouldn't have to
lay the bike on it's side to get to the last 1/4 tank of gas as I had to
 do on my DR350.

I would be wary of the IMS 7 gallon tank. They made this same claim
 a
few years ago and I bought a tank for the KLR. It only held 5.5
 gallons.

The part number for the IMS 5.5 gal tank is 113122 and the 7 is
113121. It looks like they have 2 size tanks.

Also what is the usable fuel capacity?

I believe the capacity is around 7.1 gallons. It is all completely useful if
you do the fuel mod, which I haven't done yet. I'm going to put fuel pick ups
in the shrouds. I may even add a couple for the real bottom of the tank. Who
knows? As for strength? I got tossed off on clay water crossing, more like
just a trickle. The bike slipped right out from under me. She landed square
on the tip of the left cowling. All I need to do is a little bit of sanding
to clean it up. Yes, the IMS is a tough tank. I don't know if they came up
with a new plastic, or not. I'm not going to worry about it. Between the
combination of the Acerbis hand guards, and the GIVI racks, I figure I am OK.
If they come out with some type of awesome kevlar mixture or something, then
I might consider. I really like the tank. It's strong, carry's lots of fuel,
stiffens up the area of the radiator and the overflow bottle and looks
different for the KLR. Tooting my own horn, I think the tank makes the KLR
look tougher than the stock metal tank and shrouds.

It isn't shown on the catalog or the website. First, I bought the smaller
tank where you use your old shrouds. I did not like it because the fit and
trip wasn't very good. So I contacted customer service, and somehow the
military tank came up. Maybe I asked the question, I don't remember. Anyway,
they swapped me for the other tank that didn't quite fit right. A few others
have this tank on their KLR's. You just call IMS and tell them you want to
buy a KLR 650 military tank with the extended shrouds. They'll give you few
choices of color, normally it is the color being run in the next batch. Then
you buy it. I think the price was around $235 or so, back then. I do believe
the prices have risen a little, but I am not sure. It is a nice tank. I like
it better than my stock one.

Take into consideration that the Mil Spec version sold by Dual Star is 6.6 gallons and therefore is thicker walled. The consumer version is 7 plus gallons and therefore is thinner walled. I think it may have been Pat Schmid who reported that Mike Torst had his consumer version bulging like a balloon in a 100F plus degree ride. I had my 6.6 gallon Mil Spec version out riding in 100F plus degree riding and my tank did not bulge or become flexible.

The cap diameter for the Mil Spec tank is about 1/8 inch larger than the standard IMS cap. IMS does not make a cap for it so you have to buy the proper $35 cap from Dual Star although I suspect that either a standard Clarke or Acerbis cap may fit. It may be possible to order a tank directly from IMS and request it be made to the 6.6 gallon spec with their standard cap if the high temp bulge is a worry but expect to wait for it.

It sounds to me like Mike T's tank was not venting properly....IIRC
the story he posted correctly. I read somewhere that color makes a
difference too, as the black tanks rec'd a different treatment.

Where could I find the info detailing the differences of the 2 tanks
(not from Dual Star - from IMS). I have a black tank from IMS I'm very
 happy with.

 All the best,

 Mike

			Walt,

I'm not sure if this is true anymore. The tank has been redesigned.
It now has vents on the wings. I had to wait three months to get a
tank direct from IMS. They told me the delay was due to the military
backlog and that they all came out of the same mold. The only
difference was the color. The advertised capacity is 6.6 gallons.

I have a question. The IMS tank vents via an unrestricted hose
attached to the gas cap. Lots of people install a one-way valve to
this hose to prevent gas from spilling when tipped over. My question
is this -Does this one-way valve prevent gases from escaping the tank
when needed or is it designed to allow gases to escape but not large
 quantities of liquid?
