I've started reading the 420 posts associated with my search "steering stem bearings" and have gotten to #60 with no joy. I need to replace the steering stem bearings in my '91; plan to do upper and lower. Can anyone supply the aftermarket manufacturer and part numbers so I can call up my local bearing house to see if they are a stocked item or need to be special ordered? Looks like the part number for the kit which includes upper and lower bearings and races and upper and lower seals is 41-6241 or 22-1009 or LJB30-1D. It's called a steering bearing and seal kit, Kawasaki. I've got the steering stem and outer races in the freezer now and plan to install parts in the morning. I got my All Balls kit through my local independent shop who orders from Parts Unlimited and Tucker Rocky. Cost as I remember it was about $32 and tax. Took about 4 days to get it once ordered. I did the easiest outer race removal I've ever done this morning on the upper race. I have a special puller for the Airhead BMW steering head races which just happen to be the same size as the lower KLR race. So I used it for the lower race removal. The upper race doesn't have much lip exposed inside for tapping with a punch. So after a few light taps and slips of the punch I got out my wire feed welder. I welded a bead around the inside of the race. As soon as the weld cooled for about 2 minutes I was able to pop the race out of the steering head without using any tools. I cut the lower inner bearing off the steering stem with a dremel tool and cut off wheel. Once I had a good cut into the inner race I whacked it with a hammer and cold chisel to crack it. Then it slid off the stem without much problem. I think the All Balls kit with seals will be the way to go as the lower seal usually gets knicked during removal of the inner race. If you need the actual bearing numbers let me know and I'll go to the shop and get them off the old bearings. Glenn I took my bearings to my local bearing supplier and they just ordered in the bearing. The number and maker is on the bearings. I had one go Bad in my 08 No grease from the factory. Two months out of warranty. I have the same problem in my right knee also. My first surgery was back in 1985. It made a world of difference. I had no pain up until early 2008. Things started going bad real quick then. I had my second surgery in May of 2008. I can't say the knee is 100%, but at least I can hold up the KLR without problems, walk up and down hills in the woods looking for mushrooms. I just have to be careful not to twist my right leg. That reminds me that all is not well. Doc says I will eventually need a replacement. If you are in pain, get it taken care of.
