radiator flush question

Hi All, I have a question about the process of flushing the radiator on my 03'. The Clymer Manual says to remove the tank, plastics, skid plate, and the radiator cover. Then to remove the drain plug from the bottom of the water pump, them to remove the radiator reservoir cap, and drain the radiator. Next, to remove the radiator reservoir and flush. Then, inspect all, reinstall, and refill, using a new drain plug washer. The local stealership tech told me to simply remove the lower radiator hose and drain and flush. The tech said that if you are going to use the same type radiator fluid, it is not a big deal to not drain below the bottom of the radiator reservoir. The Tech said that is the process that they use. Do you agree or disagree with this advice? That is, to only drain the radiator reservoir and not bother with draining the pump itself? It seems like the tech's method is pretty simple? About how much (volume) of radiator fluid would be left in place if one only drains the reservoir? Also, I use Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant made by Cycle Logic. Any pros or cons on that brand? It seems to me that I can avoid having to remove the radiator drain plug and to have to install a new washer and the drain plug using a Torque Wrench (it calls for 88 in-lb.). I don't have a Torque Wrench and would no know what to do with it if I did. Any info would be appreciated. So, do you all agree that it is no big deal to only drain the radiator reservoir. And, do you all think that Engine Ice Hi-Performance Coolant made by Cycle Logic is good as a replacement for the KLR? Eddie (03' KLR650 - "la podorosa")

I wouldn't worry too much. I use Zerex G05 as it's cheap and available (I used it in the cars). I drain what I can, and when I switched from regular green to Zerex, I ran some distilled (not deionized) water through, then drained again - repeat until you don't get much green in the water. Then top off with the new stuff. Since you are supposed to replace it before it's depleted, I don't see a big need to flush every ounce out. You dilute the little part in the bottom with the new stuff and chances are you'll replenish it more often if you bash up a radiator or get dirt in it somehow. No idea about your coolant though.

Go to Harbor Freight, or somewhere, and get a 1/4 in/lb torque wrench. It s fine for occasional use. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=2696 Last I checked Sears only had 3/8 but that was long time ago. It s handy for various klr maintenance. You could do it by feel but your touch may not be accurate. You don t have to get anal about changing coolant.
