wd40 as chain lube
My experiences with WD40 and KLR chains echoes Bill Watson's: there're 48,000 kms on
my '04 chain using WD40, and it's STILL good!

wd40 as chain lube
My original chain and sprockets on my 2004 lasted 16,000 miles. They
were still useable but I don't want to take chances. Why risk a
problem on the fwy or in the back country?
I use WD40 to clean sometimes and sometimes to lube the chain. I often
wipe off the chain after spraying with WD. Then I use O ring chain lube.
If my chain looks like any water got on it or any hint of rusting I
stick with WD for awhile till it looks better(if it isn't raining).
Geez, you people who get so upset when WD40 is critiqued--maybe you
didn't take enough LDS in the 60s!

wd40 as chain lube
when my chain wore out prematurely I was told that WD 40 ruins the rubber gaskets that hold the lube in an O ring chain. The mechanic said it is OK to clean chain by spraying WD40 on a rag and using it BUT not to spray WD40 on the chain itself

Why use WD as a lube? Might as well run it dry. I use WD to mount tires
because it dries up so fast. Need I say more?

Judd, Its all about statistical analysis. A pastor friend said he had 300% church growth in his rural Mississippi church. Admirable by any standard. Attendance was 7 when he started, and 21 when he left, three years later. IRT to restaurants: If you go from 2 feed troughs to 3, that is a 50% increase! So what does that mean? Rapid City has Taco Bell and Burger King! and I heard they were builing a 2d Burger Kings! Ohhh, how could it get any better. (wink, wink). revmaaatin. all said in fun--down town has some nice DINK/YUPPIE places where you can buy $5 coffee--if you like that sort of thing.> rife with restaurant options. >

wd40 as chain lube
If memory serves me right, and I believe it does, most of the guys on this list, who have proven themselves to be the most knowledgeable and helpful, with their advice on maintaining My KLR, have repeatedly touted using kerosene to clean and wd40 to maintain the chain. Seems this guys test, though it may not prove anything, does nothing to dispel this advice. It was interesting! Now its time for me to ride! The solvent from my wd-40 application to my chain, is dry now, with a nice machine oil film left behind!

In this thread, I find the LDS comment the most useful.... Amazing. Just amazing. God I love this board. What is really missing from this discussion is the caveat, "Dear list--this worked for me." But that would end the opinionated partisanship (=WD-40 vs. chain lube parties)that, oddly, creates hard feelings. INSERT: head shake with a shrug. Its your bike; oil/don't oil the chain any way you want. It only cost you ~$200 (also known as the 2-Franklin exchange) to choose poorly. By then, you will likely figure it out that you want long chain life vs short chain life. Let the record show, some things work (as by testimony) and others work better. What does NOT work, is riding it without doing something--to exclude 90wt oil treatment in sandy conditions. If you like the 90wt gig mixed with sand, start saving your Franklin's early. One last question: Is everyone in this discussion talking about (sic) O-ring chains and not mixing O-rings and conventional roller link chains? Feeding and care of them is different. revmaaatin. who is wondering if the chain lube followers ascribe a particular political assertion. From the way some people "beatify" the Blue can of WD40, you'd think it was
the purple kool-aid!! Sometimes I will use WD40, sometimes 90 wt on the
streeter, and sometimes good old fashioned chainwax.................When
the chain and sprockets need a'changin' I pony up the bucks and change all
three at the same time. I like getting my hands dirty once in a while.
But I still won't change dirty diapers.
