Byrd, I was told by a Yamaha dealer that the ignition cylinder had the key code on it. This was in reference to a Yamaha Vino scooter. Call a Kawasaki dealer and ask them if a KLR is the same. good luck. Greg To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.comFrom: devilhorn@...: Sat, 3 Jan 2009 22:28:15 +0000Subject: [DSN_KLR650] !!! It don't fit, or it don't turn ? Big Difference, if it don't fit, they used the wrong key blank. If you want I might be able to look up the key code series at work in the morning (Mon) and should might also be able to provide the key blank numbers as a reference. Almost positive my key cutter will not cut MC keys, but will look seems like I seen a few MC key blanks by the machine. Seems I seen Kawi in one of my reference books Otherwise you might have to replace the Ign switch. Time permitting will email from work Mon. A key cut for the helmet lock is supposed to work in the ignition..............it's virutally the same lock cylinder. there are two different keys for the KLR....looking from the pointy end of the the key, one is cut sorta like an "S", the other is cut sorta like a "Z" When I got my '06, I asked for a half dozen key blanks and my dealer gave me both kinds. Once again, I'll plug North County Kawasaki in Encinitas, CA. Of all the dealers I've dealt with in the poast 40 years, only the late Floyd Emde's shop has been a better place to go. Buddy

Sounds like a better product than the digital picture frames that seemed to be so popular this year.

The helmet lock only uses four pins so a key cut to fit will not work in the ignition lock as it has five pins. The position of the fifth cut on the key does not matter for the helmet lock that is why the key works for both. If the key is cut for the helmet lock it would be missing the fifth cut which does matter for the ignition lock and that is why it would not work in it. You are correct about the left and right hand keys. Some years can have either one. Also there are different blanks used depending on the year. There are at least four different key blanks possible.
