Sidi On-Roads are fine boots, and waterproof, but they are only protective enough for off- road if you never tip over, never have to dab in rocks, never snag a toe on a stump, never ride into a deep rut, never bang a shin on a serrated foot peg, in short, never do any of the stuff that you have to assume will happen when you ride off-road. I wore mine once on a trip to Moab, on the theory that I had to do 2800 road miles in order to ride maybe 700 miles in the desert. I would not do it again. I didn't break anything, but banged my feet up on several occasions.

I kind of agree with Jud's assessment. I think I good dual sport boot should incorporate at least MOST of the protection of a pair of motorcross boots and I also think they should be waterproof as well since we Dual Sporters sometimes venture further from home than a quick ride back to get our rain boots. I also have a personal issue which has made my search VERY frustrating. As with many specialty boots and shoes there is a severely limited offering of boots for those of us with WIDE feet. I'm a 10.5 EEEE and in a pinch (pun intended) could wear an EE but wide motorcycle boots are rare as hen's teeth and around here nobody carries them at all. A search of the internet finally found a few people that said that some boots are wider than others but a true EEEE is something I haven't seen yet. Most of my local off road riding is in the national forest and the roads can become very rutted and sandy and there are black creeks to cross where the bottom simply isn't visible and there is always the worry about stumps hiding in the grass. I really need a boot that offers serious protection for my nearly 60 yr old legs, feet, and ankles. $bob$

the first time I went off road riding I refused the mx boots that were offered to me and said I already had motorcycle boots I will be fine. the scar that is 2 inches above street bike boots will never go away. if you are riding risky off road you need protection more than comfort. it is uncomfortable to cut a nice street boot off a broken foot. I know I've hit things with my foot and had to stop to look to see if I had drawn blood. hal2006 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Nothing sucks more than being scared to look at a part of your body to ensure its still attached hey.... I typically wear steel toed/shanked high top boots with side zippers, I know they are not as good as MX boots, but I know they have to be better than any street bike boot and since I tend to wander alot off road and can ride fairly aggressive at times in places not a street boot would worth its cost, since mud is normally present I will stick to my lugged boot for foot traction. But with that @#$@#%@$ white crap falling from the sky, I got plenty of time again to think about it. Dooden A15 Green Ape

I'll second Jud's opinion on the On-Roads vs. Discovery boots. I've worn On-Roads on several long dualsport trips, and while I didn't bang myself up like Jud did, I was certainly aware that my feet weren't all that well protected from rocks, roots and other threats. Where they really let me down was long periods of standing on the pegs--the soles just aren't stiff enough to give the support required. On-Roads are great boots, very comfortable and waterproof, just aren't up to off pavement touring unless it's all smooth graded roads. I'm on my second pair and never had a problem with the Velcro tabs. My only complaint is that the sole wears pretty quickly. Now that I have Discoveries, the On-Roads stay on the road. Discoveries offer much more protection for shins, feet and ankles and a nice stiff sole for standing on the peg, while being comfortable enough for wearing all day and walking in. Mine are a few years old and are not waterproof, though they will keep a lot of rain spray from seeping in. If I expect a bunch of rain or water crossings, I slip on my Seal Skinz. __Arden

Arden, How does the totally flat sole/heel on the Discovery boots compare to a traditional higher heel design for mixed on/offroad use? Is there a benefit one way or the other? I'll just add my two cents.. Combat Touring Boots are to me the finest motorcycle boots made today. The are tough like motocross boots but you can actually wear them. They are made by Sidi for a famous online catalog store.. Just Google Combat Touring boots..You'll find them.. They aint cheap.. But I love mine so much. They come in two heights and with two sole choices.. I have the shorter with the cleated soles ..Good traction..Water resistant enough for me.. and the are well made and will protect your ankle. Check 'em out my friends

Steve, I don't miss having a tradtional heel, and prefer not to have one for dirt riding since a heel can catch on stuff when you put your foot down. You're much safer without one. I'm pretty sure the Sidi's have a rise at the rear of the footbed for foot comfort, but I don't have the boots here with me. __Arden

Nobody mentioned the Gaerne Explorer Boots for $180. I have a pair and I really like them. Comfy in all situations and I think waterproof. They claim water resistant. My feet never got wet even when scuba diving. well, I think their great and thats my story. http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Rider/Gaerne 20Explorer%20Boot.htm
