petcock failure/ gas everywhere

Post by Tumu Rock » Mon Oct 13, 2008 9:29 am

The petcock on my KLR no longer turns off. It has poured so much gas through the carb that there was a large puddle of gas underneath the bike. I'm sure I need to rebuild the petcock especially the gasket and packing around the fuel selector lever. Since the fuel made it to the floor though, does that mean the float needle in the carb failed too? Seems like fuel was leaking out of everywhere near the carb... Thanks for any insight, da Vermonster

Most likely the diaphragm allowed gas to leak through the vacuum port. I would suggest repairing or replacing the petcock first then trying it out before messing with the carb. Before you attempt to start the engine remove the spark plug and crank it outside wearing goggles to make sure the cylinder did not fill with gas. If it did the exhaust system will have residual gas in it so be prepared for a huge backfire with flame out of the exhaust when you do start it. Also change the oil as fuel may have contaminated it. If afterwards you suspect the float needle is leaking you could try draining the float bowl then allowing it to refill as this may dislodge any grit holding it open without going into the carb. Walt

<> No. The pressure from the fuel in the tank can be enough to flood the carb. However, if the petcock failed, most likely it's dripping down the fuel line and/or both.

Be SURE to remove the spark plug and turn the engine over to avoid a "hydraulic lock" IN CASE the cylinder got filled with gas!!! ED

Tumu, I did a petcock rebuild in June. Fred has the kit, When you finally rebuild the petcock: Take the tank off for best results and access.... I first attempted to tighten up the screws on the back side. Should have known that a 10 y/o diaphragm might be shot... You can try that first, but I would not hold your breath. I first took the petcock off while the bike lay on its side...then reinstalled. 2d removal, I then took the tank off, as the 'angle' to the bolts holding the petcock are not very convenient. Takes about an hour total. Be sure to have the clymer manual handy as there is some correct orientation required when you are putting the guts back in it. revmaaatin.

Thanks Walt, et. al, It isn't the vaccuum diaphragm that failed, it's the "off switch". Swapped it with an older petcock I have laying around but it has a similar problem, just not as bad. Upon further inspection, I think I need to replace the gasket behind the fuel tap lever and probably the o-ring on the lever as well. I especially apprecaite the tips about removing the spark plug... hadn't occurred to me that the cylinder could have filled. da Vermonster - back to the garage....
