turn signal failure

The right turn signal on my '04 KLR650 is in-op. The back light remains out and thus the front won't blink. I've changed bulbs from the back left to right and the problem remains the same. So, the bulb isn't the problem. My question: How do I proceed to track down the cause f this problem? My son and I recently went down the Continental Divide Ride and we fell over numerous times. Both bike developed the exact same problem. Greg, The first thing I would check is to see if the two leads that go into the fender-complex under the seat are attatched/broken/corroded. Can you set up an alligator clip to go from the source/ground to power a bulb to see if it is the assembly? revmaaatin.

Hi Rev, I had the same experience as you with another filter. without an external fuel filter I would hit reserve at 4.7 gal consistently, in the Dallas TX area there's still a gas station on every other corner so it's easy to fill up as soon as going to reserve. After adding the Auto Zone fuel filter I still hit reserve at 4.7 gal. ,with the A-19 OEM fuel tank I've measured the gas to fill a dry tank to the neck inside the tank at 5.5 gallons and on one occasion while traveling in Wyoming I added 5.2 gal. so I know the Auto Zone filter does work without noticeable restriction. Keep it simple. Hang a multimeter (hehehe) on the bulb base and see if you get power, then the base-to-bulb connection could be tweaked. If you don't, check the little connectors under the fender and see if they connect and if you get power to the feeder side of them. After that, check the connector under the seat, etc etc.. follow the wire upstream and you'll narrow it down. I'm thinking connectors, but it could be the relay.

You can test/examine the rear connectors under the rear fender. (Mine were crossed when I got my 04 new.) On my 04 the wire broke inside the insulation near the steering bearings. You can try spraying contact cleaner in the left thumb switch. You can also change the flasher module which is a hassle cuz under the tank but it only costs $2 ie it is the common old car type. Start at the base of the stock, trace wires, check bullet connectors that let you remove it, check for signal, if no go grab a test light and check the wire leads to see if the problem exists at that location. Not sure if a flasher would do that or not, many have reported alot of troubles with the electrical connectors on the KLR from corrosion to ill fitted. Might be just a simple unplug of a wire at the taillight, I use that area to tie my bike down for transport, and try my best to push wires outta the way but $hit happens.
