broken shroud peg - common?
One of the plastic pegs that attaches the right-side radiator shroud
has cracked. Is this common on KLR's, I mean, for the plastic
attachment pegs on the radiator shroud to break? I have an 03'. And,
has anyone had success in Super Gluing the peg back in place? Or used
any other type of plastic adhesive to reattach a radiator shroud peg?
Thanks!

Yeah, I epoxied mine back on and it has withstood a lot since. I broke
mine being stupid a long time ago......Use some plastic epoxy or
similar material and it should work for you.

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Eddie, I've got a broken peg on my 03 right shroud too. I always have tank panniers attached so they hold the shroud in place. I also broke the flat tabs in the front of the shroud on both sides. I replaced those with little aluminum "L" brackets I made. I pop riveted them to the shrouds. They hold up well. I think I remember Mike Frederick fixing his shroud pegs in 2004 using a long bolt/nut combination along with a plastic piece for mounting a part on a toilet. I'd have to take a look in a hardware store to see what part it was as I just don't remember. But what I do remember is it popped right into the rubber grommet on the tank and held like it was suppose to. The rounded bolt head kind of blends in with the shroud graphics so it's not very noticeable. Please let the list know what you come up with for a fix. I'll probably fix mine since I'm in there right now. But it's pretty low priority for me right now. broken shroud peg - common?
Eddie:
My left shroud (radiator side) is the one that takes a beating. That
peg broke off in a wreck with a BMW F650GS last summer (long story
).
I cut a piece of dowel rod that was the proper diameter to fit in
the "U" channel of the plastic peg. I then placed it in the "U"
channel and cross drilled it from side to side (plastic / dowel /
plastic). I then lathered the dowel rod up with a 2-part epoxy, placed
it in the "U" channel and then laced brass wire (right diameter I had
for the job and pliable) through all of those cross-drilled holes.
After it cured, I cut the dowel to be level with broken-off plastic
peg. Then drilled a pilot hole in the end and then ran a sheet metal
(w/ washer) through the shroud into the dowel pilot hole. Peg fixed.

Eddie (03' KLR650 - "la poderosa") ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I had a broken one and used baking soda and crazy glue to glue it back on. Has held up very well. First, sprinkle the baking soda carefully until you build up a nice bead of it. You can use a teaspoon to help apply and position it. Then hit it with the crazy glue and it will set up like cement. ed A17

Hi Ed, I ran across the fix with the crazy glue and baking soda many years ago and it like you said is an excellent fix, but from experience, mine and probably yours as well make sure you have some kind of small fan or something blowing across the part you are glueing, away from you because whatever kind of gas is given off when you mix the crazy glue and baking soda is definitely not good...have a great day.....Greg

I still think your suggestion of using a fan is a good one, and it's also a good idea to do it outside. ed A17

We are definitely on the same wavelength here, zip
ties, or pieces of wire get it all together again.
No more worries about cosmetics with a fueltank that
has been re-remended with epoxy stuff. The bike is
dirty and muddy most of the time anyhow, so it hardly
shows. Jacostarica.

Yes it is common. I drilled throuth mine and put a small screw and nut
through the center. Its in its 3rd year now. Works great. By the way, I
tried PC7. It doesn't stick to KLR plastic.
