newbie question
Hi,
I recently purchased a klr650 -A15, my first dual sport. I love this
bike and am actually considering selling my cruiser. With the klr, I
am discovering the amazing differnce a lighter bike makes.
The question I have is replacing the stock mirrors with the honda
xl659 mirrors to lessen vibration. Are the honda mirrors better? Does
anything "special" need to be done to install them? Somebody who has
gone thru this exercise please comment.

Better at cutting vibration? Yes. How much? Depends on the bike. My
experience was a great deal. Most report improvement. A few don't see any
difference. You have to purchase the entire unit, the base and the mirror
with stalk...the KLR mirror won't fit in the base...

newbie question
Hello,
Welcome to the club! I too have an A15, great bike. The Honda mirrors
go on with very little trouble...the only "mod" I had to make was to
turn the front brake/switch cluster down just a hair to clear the weight
on the bottom on the Honda mirror. THh change is so small you won't
even notice it. The mirrors work well and are far better than the stock
Kawi ones tho there is still some vibration.
Good ridin'

newbie question
As a new rider (both to motorcycles and the KLR650), I am beginning to think
I am shifting at the wrong rpms. All this talk about "never be in 2nd going
15mph" has got me wondering.
I normally shift between 2500 and 3500 rpm. Is this about right? After
2500 miles I am still only getting mpg in the low 40s, so maybe I am
shifting at too low of an rpm (admittedly, I occasionally am way off and get
the chug, chug, chug until I feather the clutch a little). To be honest, if
I am going 15mph in 1st, I am wanting badly to shift. I seem to recall that
the manual that came with my '01 was suggesting even slower shift speeds, or
maybe I was reading the chart wrong.
Any help is much appreciated.

For my day-to-day around town riding, I upshift at 4k rpm. I try to hold around 3k to 3.5k rpm steady cruise. I used to get a consistent 50mpg this way. I upshift around 4-5 under "trying to get there" kind of riding. When
I'm stuck in traffic, it's around 3 or so. I downshift around 3 - 4k
but am very smooth with it when I can help it and try to have the gas
in the right position so there's no lurching on the chain drive
system.
General riding I'm at about 4k just because I like how it sounds
about there. The only time I'm above 5k is on the highway in 4th or
4th gear. In lower gears is just sounds insanely loud and stressed
out on the bike especially in 1st or 2nd gear although it's fun to
scare the passersby from time to time.
I have a 16 tooth front sprocket and it's funny because I can
actually go from a dead stop, having the bike shifted in 2nd gear.
Not bad

Depends on the situation, but considering the engine's youth, I would shift a bit later. _Very_ generally, the wider the throttle opening, the higher the revs you should use. As the bike is still being run in, I guess the owners manual might tell you that up to 4000rpm is ok, and by now maybe more. You will eventually have a ~6500rpm redline, so the engine is designed to spin. The engine's peak torque would be somewhere around 5000rpm, so the designers were expecting the engine to spend quite a lot of time up around there.> As a new rider (both to motorcycles and the KLR650), I am beginning to think > I am shifting at the wrong rpms. In my experience, the KLR takes a while to run in, so don't be too concerned about the fuel mileage yet.> After > 2500 miles I am still only getting mpg in the low 40s, so maybe I am > shifting at too low of an rpm
Well, that's just inexperience. Bike gearboxes are lot closer ratio'd than most car 'boxes so you have to get used to shifting, and bikes are designed for that.> (admittedly, I occasionally am way off and get > the chug, chug, chug until I feather the clutch a little).
Heh, try riding a four cylinder 250: peak power after 17,000rpm, sweet range past 10,000rpm (e.g. Kawasaki ZX2-R).> To be honest, if > I am going 15mph in 1st, I am wanting badly to shift.
Dunno. Can you quote some of that stuff from the book? Mister_T KLR600 ("Big Red") Melbourne Australia> I seem to recall that > the manual that came with my '01 was suggesting even slower shift speeds, or > maybe I was reading the chart wrong.

newbie question
Hello all,
I picked up a 1996 KLR last friday. It has 20,000 miles on it
There is an od knock comming from the motor that I didn't notice when I
bought it. Could this be the evil counter balancer and chain that I've
heard about. It seems to eminate from the right side when I take of in
first gear or accselerate from the bottom end. Or from an idle just
popping the throttle a bit. Other than that the bike is in very good
shape. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Cheers,
Dave
