Hi Steve.

Thank you for your input/advice. I've provided my answers and comments below:

Q: What sort of injustice did HD inflict on you to deserve your incessant vitriol?
A: Builds mediocre machines that turn many normal purchasers into self indulgent, egotistical, delusional a-holes that I, and many others unfortunately have to put up with.

Q: Did your mama's HD-riding boyfriend whip you with his studded belt or what?

A: That's a little personal wouldn't you say? Lashing out are we? A lesser person would be offended.

Maybe it would be better for us all if you chanted your HD-bashing to yourself in the mirror every morning.

I'll take that under advisement, but, not likely.

If you require constant affirmation or just need to hear the sound of your own voice, record your tirades on your Radio Shack cassette player and listen to them at your convenience, but -please- spare the rest of us. We heard you loud and clear the first time.

Last time I checked, freedom of speech was still in effect and here's a news flash: Cassettes have been replaced with MP3 players/recorders. I think you're the odd man out. I'd bet that there are more people enjoying this exchange than not.

Just out of curiosity, would you be a Harley rider? It appears that the above advice you are so generously providing me might just be your method to prepare yourself for a serious bike polishing session and maybe a grueling two mile long haul to the coffee shop to trade fabricated riding stories with your biker-in-a-can, bad-boy wanna be pals.

   Regards.

   Don

The words "decent performance" and "Harley" are seldom used in the same sentence. HD isn't about performance. It's all about tinsel, chrome and noise. And of course, separating suckers from large quantities of their money. Surprisingly, they keep coming and continue to empty their bank accounts to purchase these pinnacles of mediocrity. All for the illusion that they have transformed themselves into something they are not and will never be. Except maybe broke. I wonder if that's why HD riders carry the 14 inch long wallets bolted to their asses with a six foot dog chain. Just to remind themselves how much money they blew on their tinsel noise maker. Or, maybe the wallet's so big to carry all the money they will need to fix it and the chains come in handy for a tow home?

Don,

You took my bait, I've no interest in yours. The point was to get the unproductive anti-HD posturing/envy/whatever off the list. Meaningful discussion/comparison regarding different marques is informative and interesting, but the ranting was getting onerous and someone had to throw themselves on the grenade for the good of the List.

I'll respond to your mail off-list. I have no illusions about changing your perspective, but if you really need to vent then I'm willing to help you out.

I'm late to the party.

I'll defend H-D even though I will likely never own one - I
simply don't like them (yes, I have ridden them). I don't like
cruisers in general. ...Not my kind of bike.

(My kind of bike is the KLR and the modern "retro" styled
bikes - ZRX, FZ, Bandit - and almost all dirt bikes)

The newer Harleys are better built, reliable, don't leak oil, and are low
maintenance. However, with those air cooled V-Twins, the trailing
cylinder normally runs much hotter than the one in front and is often
 the first to wear out.

Although the build quality is way better now than it was 20 years ago,
the basic design hasn't changed much. By 50,000 miles, many Harleys
are ready for a rebuild. By 50,000 miles, many KLRs are also ready for
a rebuild - but you have to consider that the piston in the KLR has seen
more than double the engine revolutions than most H-D engines have.

(Qualifier to above - KLRs that are ridden off road a lot usually won't make
 it to 50,000 miles)

I'd give the advantage to the KLR, but won't knock the Harley. I'll
readily poke fun at the tassles, chrome, doo rags, wallet chains, assless
chaps, etc. That's a mystique that I will never understand.

You know guys ...... I like motorcycles, just about every frigging
one of them. They all serve different purposes and functions
and ...... lifestyles. I rode a long time nothing but dirt. Then I
got into dual sport and sport touring and love that kind of stuff.
And heck, I like watching the Discovery channel and watching the
Orange County guys (and others) make what I call Art bikes. Loved the
crazy ride on the seat doing the iron cross thing .... the late
Indian Larry. Evil Kinevel to me ranks right up there with all my
other heros like Malcom Smith, Bud Ekins, Kenny Roberts, and
Carmicheal. I watched Travis Pastrana the other day doing the X games
and I was like most normal humans, absolutely stunned to see what he
does on 2 wheels. The guys at say Confederate Motorcycles rank right
up there to me with John Britten and newer guys like Eric Buell. They
think different and choose different new paths to 2 wheels. But they
are all 2 wheels and everyone I ever rode on has given me a thrill
including the Flathead Harley K when I was 14 and the Vespa I totally
destroyed at the same age. But I didn't think much of my first 2
wheel motor vehicle, a piece of crap Cushman Highlander. It is
embarrassing that a country that put a man on the moon would produce
such a piece of junk. Cushman knew when all those Honda 90's and
160's invaded their game was over. Now that just about all bikes are
really good, can't we all just get along.

I'm with you, I have always liked the looks of a Sporty and since I
put a lot of miles on my bikes, who cares about resale. Now that they
finally mounted the engine in rubber, bigger tank, and put the pegs
on the frame, they are an attractive alternative to the overly
plastic bikes we have today. Something that looks and sounds nice
without too much maintenance with 60's look and feel. It is a pain to
pull the plastic on my Concourse to get at the valves. Something you
 don't have to do on a Sporty. And I won't be going the 135 - 140 the
Concourse will do after the costs of my last speeding ticket.

Thanks for the offer Steve, but no thanks.

Save it for the coffee shop. I'm certain your slate will be full unscrambling the feeble minds of other HD (Hopelessly Delusional) riders.

   Check for gills!

Strangely enough, I have been trying to figure out this problem too, I
do keep coming up with the same answer, but I don't like it. Could this
fellow be a rancher trying to sell more leather to the chaps industry? I
hope so. To put the problem in Shakespearean terms; " Methinks the lady
